    Boiler plant rehab nears

Construction is due to start in August on Argonne-East's largest construction project outside of the Advanced Photon Source, said Project Manager John Daum (PFS-FPE). The new project is a $10 million rehabilitation of Argonne-East's central heating plant, the facility that generates steam used throughout the site.

The project's goal is to decrease operating costs and increase reliability of the site's steam supply, said Jim Heine (PFS-US), the manager of Utility Systems.

Preparation for the project began during the shutdown of Argonne-East's steam supply over the Labor Day weekend last year. Main steam header valves were installed at that time to allow for future work on individual boilers without affecting the entire system.

The four-year project will provide urgently needed rehabilitation and upgrading of plant systems that are no longer adequate, efficient or reliable.

The project will also include a central computer monitoring system that will compile all data currently displayed in multiple locations throughout the plant.

The project is in various stages of design and purchasing. Construction begins this August with the replacement of an old, rusting tank that holds condensate (water generated during steam processes) returned to the central plant from the distribution system.

PFS-FPE is also working with the Department of Energy to propose the plant as the site for the High Performance Steam System (HPSS) project. The HPSS project is a cogeneration system (a system that produces electricity and steam) using an innovative ultra-high-pressure steam boiler and turbine under development by DOE.

Employee picnic set for July 8

Argonne, DOE-CH employees and their families are invited to the 1995 Argonne-East picnic Saturday, July 8, at Argonne Park. Gates will open at 10 a.m. Events will begin at 10:30 a.m. and the picnic ends at 4 p.m. The annual event is presented by the Argonne Club, and admission is free. Attractions will include a dunk tank, moonwalk, hay rack, "Red Baron" and train rides, bungee run, chess challenge and a golf chip contest. Music will be provided by a Dixieland band. Marriott Corp. will provide food for purchase.

Ice water to help APS beat the heat

Argonne's Advanced Photon Source has received a $1.35 million grant from the U.S. Department of Energy to build an innovative system to help cool the X-ray facility's huge experiment hall and accelerator equipment.

The ice thermal storage plant will supplement the conventional chiller system already in place. The most obvious modification will be the construction of a concrete tank 20 feet high and 94 feet long. The tank will hold more than 250,000 gallons of ice and water at near-freezing temperatures.

At night, when electric rates are lowest, the system will make ice. Between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., when electric rates are highest, the melting ice will provide additional cooling for the APS, reducing electricity demand. The system will reduce Argonne's electric bill by about $237,000 during its first year of operation.

The ice storage system will also protect sensitive equipment in the experiment hall if one of the three main chillers breaks down, said Bill Sproule, assistant project director for conventional facilities. The experiment hall must be kept at a constant temperature year-round.

Funding for the system is coming from the DOE In-House Energy Management program, which provides incentives to lower the cost of energy use in its facilities.

    Speaker to cover blend
    of ancient art, science

Diana Magaloni, art conservator and staff researcher at the Institute of Art Research of the University of Mexico, will speak on a collaborative effort between Argonne and the university to find the best way to restore pre-Columbian murals.

The lecture, sponsored by Arts at Argonne, will be held Friday, July 14, at 10:30 a.m. in Argonne-East's Building 362 Auditorium.

The "Pre-Columbian Mural Painting Project," aimed at restoring mural paintings on ancient stone buildings in Teotihuacan near Mexico City and at various sites near Veracruz on the Gulf of Mexico. The Teotihuacanos used a system of painted symbols to inscribe their history onto their murals, making these paintings an important resource for understanding the history of pre-Columbian societies.

Magaloni has been studying pre-Columbian mural painting techniques since 1990. Her work is part of the directed by Beatriz dela Fuente of the University of Mexico and the Institute of Anthropology and History of Mexico. She has published a number of articles in scientific journals and is the author of a recent book on the murals of Cacaxtla.

    OPA's McGrath honored for speech

John McGrath, OPA's marketing and management communications director, won the Publicity Club of Chicago's prestigious Silver Trumpet Award for "The New Uncertainty Principle." Originally a speech given by Laboratory Director Alan Schriesheim to a General Motors audience in Detroit, the analysis of how current political and economic conditions affect the national laboratories appeared in the The Scientist and other major publications in the United States and abroad. It also appeared as a "Director's Corner" in Argonne News.

Affirmative Action program to be reviewed

The Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs (OFCCP) will review Argonne's affirmative action plan and efforts the week of July 10.

During the audit, OFCCP may schedule random informational interviews with employees, supervisors and managers. Management is required to cooperate with OFCCP, but employee participation is optional. All interviews will be scheduled through Human Resources' Diversity Program Office.

OFCCP is authorized to conduct a compliance review under Executive Order 11246, which prohibits discrimination on the basis of race, color, religion, sex or national origin by employers with federal contracts. Large federal contractors like Argonne also are required to have a written affirmative action plan.

For more information, call Diversity Manager Deborah Ashton at ext. 2-3021.

Safety equipment on display in `Big Rig'

Argonne-East employees are invited to view many kinds of safety equipment at Brady USA's Traveling Trade Show Wednesday, July 5, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in Argonne-East's Building 213 parking lot.

Items on display in Brady's "Big Rig" custom-designed semi-truck will include safety signs, lockout and tagout equipment and labeling materials.
