Circle for Christians Against STI's/AIDS, Douala, Cameroon

Issues: Because no cure for iradicated HIV in blood currently exits, the disease turns the lives of infected persons completely up side down, disrupting their most intimate relationships and shattering their life goals and personal dream. Description: CCASA (Circle for Christians Against STI's/AIDS) is Catholic Christians Youths Association which assist and give psychological and spiritual support to PLWA. To better responses to psychological well-being and quality of life of our patients we have collected pronounced emotional responses at different crisis point. We need this to the preperation of counsellors to determine which providers can best adress with aspect of patient education and psycological support. [table: see text] Lessons learned: We realize that progression of HIV infection is fraught with uncertainty, resulting in pronounced emotional responses at different crisis point. Strong social taboos concerning the sexual means of transmission use result, to a certain extent in "Blaming the victim". Neurological disfunction can generate profond anxiety in PLWA, their partner and family members. Mental illness may also cause behavioural problems that can contribute to futher immune suppression and re-infectionof HIV or other partogens. Recommendations: HIV counselling and referral services should be available to index patients regardless of wether or not they choose to participate in partner notification. Program managers should routinely evaluate the performance of counselors to ensure that high quality services are being delivered in psychological matter. Psychological well-bieng of PLWA should not been underestimated in care planing approach. Nurses and counselors should continually reinforce psychological capacities of PLWA throught health-promoting intervention that focus on wellness and quality of life.
