Pakistan 2000/2001 Wheat Crop Crop Assessment: Precipitation

PECAD Report | Crop stage estimation | Remote Sensing - Vegetation Index | Precipitation | Temperatures

Pakistan Wheat: Estimated Precipitation in Main Production Region
Rainfall: Both this season and last season have been drier than normal, with the 2000/2001 crop experiencing even drier conditions in the main wheat belt than last season. Rainfall accumulation from January through early April has been less than last year. However, given that the crop is mostly irrigated (86% of production) the key factors will be availability of irrigation water during the critical pollination stage.

  • The following precipitation maps highlight differences between the growing season of 2000 as compared to last year in regard to cumulative precipitation during 10 day increments.
  • Red symbols indicate 2000 season drier during this part of the month at this location. While blue colored symbols indicate more precipitation in 2000 than in 1999 for the same time period in the specified location. Gray represents similar amount of precipitation received in both years.
  • The maps were created using a database of estimated precipitation provided by the US airforce based on a 25 nautical mile grid system.
Dekadel Period Ending January 20: similar precipitation levels between the two seasons unitl mid January. Dekadal Period Ending February 20: Decrease in estimated rainfall amount begin to appear in the Punjab.
Dekadal Period Ending March 20: Greater divergence between the 2000 and 1999 precipitation regimes becomes more apparent. Dekadal Period Ending April 1: Northern Punjab continues to be lag behind precipitation levels of last season.
