NCI Announces Integrated Plan to Fight Lung
Cancer
Brief Description:
With the goal of reducing suffering and death due to cancer by 2015,
the National Cancer Institute has unveiled an integrated plan aimed
at fighting lung cancer.

Thornton: With the goal of reducing suffering and
death due to cancer by 2015, the National Cancer Institute has announced
what they
call an Integrated Implementation Plan to Fight Lung Cancer. Each year,
160-thousand people in the United States are diagnosed with lung cancer,
making it the leading cause of cancer deaths in the country. Dr. Mark
Clanton Deputy Director of the NCI described the three main goals of
this concentrated effort.
Clanton: Those three general areas are first
to reduce lung cancer by basically improving our prevention strategies
and tobacco control strategies. The second is in the area of improving
the likely hood of cure by finding lung cancers much earlier and the
third is engaging new ways of delivering drugs to those patients who
have lung cancer and need to be treated.
