Trial Description

Purpose:

Drugs used in chemotherapy, such as 17-N-allylamino-17-demethoxygeldanamycin, work in different ways to stop the growth of cancer cells, either by killing the cells or by stopping them from dividing. It may also stop the growth of cancer cells by blocking some of the enzymes needed for cell growth.

This phase I trial is studying the side effects and best dose of 17-N-allylamino-17-demethoxygeldanamycin in treating patients with chronic phase chronic myelogenous leukemia that did not respond to imatinib mesylate.

Eligibility:

Eligibility criteria include the following:

• At least 18 years old
• More than 2 weeks since interferon or cytarabine
• More than 6 weeks since busulfan

Final eligibility for a clinical trial is determined by the health professionals conducting the trial.

Treatment/Intervention:

Patients will receive a 15- or 60-minute infusion of 17-N-allylamino-17-demethoxygeldanamycin twice a week for up to 3 months. Some patients may then continue to receive 17-N-allylamino-17-demethoxygeldanamycin for as long as benefit is shown.

Patients will be evaluated periodically for 1 month.
