Preliminary cash receipts from 1995 marketings of Michigan crops, livestock and livestock products totaled nearly $3.55 billion. Total cash receipts were up 5 percent from the previous year, placing Michigan 19th nationally. Crop cash receipts rose 12 percent from 1994, to $2.23 billion. Sales of most crops increased with the major exceptions of tart cherries and dried beans. Livestock cash receipts, at $1.32 billion, were down 5 percent from a year ago. Decreased sales of beef and dairy products contributed most to the decline.
Preliminary U.S. data shows that total cash receipts were up 3 percent to $185.6 billion for 1995. Crop cash receipts increased 8 percent to $98.7 billion a new record high. Livestock declined 1 percent to $86.9 billion.
Michigan's 1995 gross farm income rose to $4.06 billion in 1995, up 5 percent from the previous year. Total production expenses were virtually unchanged from 1994, falling 1 percent to $3.6 billion.
The increase in income was led by cash crops, rising 10 percent from 1994's level to $2.2 billion in 1995. Leading the cash crops in 1995 was corn, which rose 26 percent to $412 million. Changes in expenses for feed, seed and fertilizer were minimal from 1994 but expenses for contract and hired labor fell 8 percent to $417 million in 1995.
Total 1994 farm debt in Michigan was $2.6 billion, almost 2 percent higher than in 1993. Total farm assets, at $16.6 billion, were up 4 percent from the previous year. The increase in farm assets was led primarily by higher real estate values, which grew to nearly $11.5 billion. The debt/asset ratio improved to 15.6 for 1994, down from 16.0 in 1993.
Government payments to farmers in Michigan climbed to $151 million in 1995, up from $102 million the previous year, but well below 1993. The rise is primarily due to increased payments for feed grain programs and other miscellaneous programs.
