Association of the Employees of the Center of Reference in STD/AIDS Herbert de Souza - Betinho, Sao Paulo, Brazil

ISSUES: The creation of a web page by the health care workers and patients in a STD/AIDS clinic in a peripheral area of Sao Paulo DESCRIPTION: The amazing growing of communication through the web is already a reality in Brazil. However, the Internet it is not equally accessible to the population, specially the poor. Internet connection is a luxury to the Herbert de Souza Health Care Clinic's (a.k.a. 'Betinho') clients. Health care workers at that clinic create a home page to promote AIDS related issues communication. The home page shows information on Aids/Std including tips on nutrition for HIV-infected individuals and advising for those who take care of AIDS patients. We offer interactive pages where internauts can suggests the month discussion subject, and teenagers engaged in jobs along with prevention group, help its development. We answer questions on STD/AIDS sexuality and drugs. We are engaging the clinic professionals and patients both inviting them to write papers as well as asking them to help answering e-mails. RESULTS: The web page has been visited by 12.700 people (of April the December of 2001). Those who had contacted us, 80% are aged between 13 and 25 years, and their doubts are related to contamination forms/symptoms of STD/AIDS, where to get anti-HIV testing, the first sexual intercourse, pregnancy and orgasm issues. To engage community teenagers in preparing the web-page warranties the subject/language hits out our target population. To patients having their testimony available to the "world", stimulates them getting new information on medicines/treatment and more then this rethinking their own lives hearing them told first by themselves and later reading them in the web-page, receiving messages from readers is always an emotion moment. Being able to tell all their experience in the last years and how much everything has changed the forms of being/thinking/acting makes up possible the perception of the enrichment of their own history.
