How long is my ESTA authorization valid?

(02/27/2009)

A: ESTA authorization is typically valid for a period of two years or until the applicant’s passport expires, whichever comes first.

  • Travelers are not required to apply for new ESTA authorization every time they travel.
  • A new travel authorization is required if the traveler is
    • Issued a new passport;
    • Changes his or her name;
    • Changes his or her gender;
    • Traveler’s country of citizenship changes;
    • Or the circumstances underlying the traveler’s previous responses to the ESTA application questions requiring a “yes” or “no” response have changed.

Travelers seeking admission to the United States under the VWP may be admitted for 90 days. Travelers seeking admission to the United States for longer than 90 days must obtain a visa at the nearest U.S. Embassy or Consulate. An ESTA approval only authorizes a traveler to board a carrier for travel to the United States under the VWP. An approved ESTA is not a guarantee of admissibility to the United States at a port of entry. In all cases, CBP officers make admissibility determinations at U.S. ports of entry or pre-clearance facilities.
