how do bison migrate together? How many of them usually herd together

[ ChatModerator - 22 - 06:38:51 ]
Historically, these herd animals travelled traveled together by the thousands and perhaps hundreds of thousands. That was before fences and when their numbers were far greater than they are today. There are very few free-ranging bison today. Pay attention and much of you questions will be addressed by our speakers.

[ Kate/NASAChatHost - 23 - 06:38:54 ]
Morgan, Asley, Christina... We see your hellos. Please ask a question and I will post it to the experts.

[ Justin_and_Sam - 111 - 07:26:26 ]
What is the Native American position on the killing of bison?

[ Cibola - 112 - 07:26:55 ]
According to Plains Indian mythology, bison had their origins in the Earth itself: "Every spring, immense herds of new animals swarmed like bees from a hive out of the canyons of the Llano Estacado to spread across the plains once again. Like the stars, like the winds, bison could never be made to disappear."

[ Hannah_Wes_Clif - 113 - 07:26:58 ]
to Sam and Jonathan: No, there were a few other Indian tribes

[ ChatModerator - 114 - 07:28:40 ]
RE: [Cheyenne] Do Indians still get to hunt buffalo?
Some tribes have their own herds which they control and can hunt. All the other bison are on government or private property-no free-ranging and no season for hunting them. There are ranches that raise them for the commercial bison meat market.

[ Justin_and_Sam - 115 - 07:28:41 ]
How do bison sleep??

[ JasonAbilene - 116 - 07:28:41 ]

To Wild Bill Lone Ranger: Bison roam freely in Yellowstone in Wyoming, Wichata National Wildlife Refuge in Oklahoma, Wind River National Monument in South Dakota, Custer State Park in South Dakota, and Fort Wingate in New Mexico.

[ Justin_and_Sam - 148 - 07:37:08 ]
can bison get heat stroke in the summer?

[ ChatModerator - 149 - 07:37:08 ]
Their coats act as insulation from heat as well as cold. They just move around less, and eat less like people when it's too hot.

[ Hannah_Wes_Clif - 150 - 07:37:43 ]
To Justin and Sam: Actually, cows lay down and ruminate. Horses sleep standing up sometimes.

[ Jessie/GarySchool - 151 - 07:38:28 ]

Can we see some bisonin in Mex. and NewMex.??? Are bison relatted to yak?

[ ChatModerator - 161 - 07:40:39 ]
There may be some bison in New Mexico on some ranches where it is not too dry. They are related to the yak in that they are all wild bovine cattle.

[ Hannah_Wes_Clif - 162 - 07:41:32 ]
To Goldthwaite Elementary Kindergarten: There are 33 bison at Caprock Canyons. They roam on 330 acres.

[ ChatModerator - 163 - 07:41:58 ]
RE: [Ben] We are from Valley. About two rooms down the hall. We want to know what is the difference between a bison and a buffalo.
True buffalo are the asian water buffalo and the cape buffalo from Africa. The bison are unique to N. America and Europe-Europian Biso are called Wisent.

[ Hannah_Wes_Clif - 164 - 07:43:07 ]
To Ben: Bison is the scientific name for buffalo. I'll deal with you later.

[ SamandJonathan - 165 - 07:44:03 ]
HOW MANY BUFFALO DID INDIANS KILL PER YEAR?

[ Hannah_Wes_Clif - 166 - 07:44:21 ]
To Ben: Bison is the scientific name for buffalo. I'll deal with you later.

[ ChatModerator - 167 - 07:44:21 ]
Actually, they were called buffalo by French explorers who thought they looked like cattle(or beouf in French).

[ Hannah_Wes_Clif - 168 - 07:44:32 ]
To Adam Abeline: Men hunted and protected the tribe.

[ Justin_and_Sam - 169 - 07:44:59 ]

to Sam and Jonathan: No, there were a few other Indian tribes

[ JanaEdington - 173 - 07:46:06 ]
330 acres is not very big. Do you plan to expand the area where they roam. I am sure you have to supplement their feeding. How often do you feed them? And what do you feed them?

[ ChatModerator - 174 - 07:46:39 ]
RE: [SamandJonathan] HOW MANY BUFFALO DID INDIANS KILL PER YEAR?
Depends on the sze of the family group and the abundance of the bison. They did not usually kill more than they needed.

[ Hannah_Wes_Clif - 175 - 07:46:47 ]
To Billie: I have grown up on ranches with from 300 to 800 cows. There are the cattle that don't all bed down at the same time because they have the watchers (for predators) and the "babysitters". How old are you?

[ BenChrisatValley - 176 - 07:47:28 ]
Do Indians do a sacred dance at a Indian burial? And why is it so sacred?

[ ChatModerator - 177 - 07:47:29 ]
RE: [SamandJonathan] HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO PUT UP AND TAKE DOWN TEE-PEE
The women could do it in about 5 minutes. Probably comes down just as quickly.

[ Luke - 178 - 07:47:55 ]
To Hannah, What is the difference between a buffalo and a bison ?

[ SamandJonathan - 179 - 07:48:26 ]
WHY DO FEATHERS HOLD SUCH SIGNIFICANCE IN NATIVE AMERICAN CULTURE?

[ Hannah_Wes_Clif - 180 - 07:50:13 ]
To Jana Edigton: We are supplementally feeding them. We do intend to expand the area. We are feeding them range cubes three times a week and we also feed round bales of hay when the grass is short.

[ BenChrisatValley - 181 - 07:50:51 ]
How do you get so many feathers in your headdress?

[ ChatModerator - 182 - 07:51:13 ]
RE: [JanaEdington] 330 acres is not very big. Do you plan to expand the area where they roam. I am sure you have to supplement their feeding. How often do you feed them? And what do you feed them?
We hope to have a place where the offspring can be moved and develop a free roaming herd. We feed cattle cubes, hay, adn there is some grass in the pen to graze on. 4 lbs a week per animal. 2 round bails of hay(about 1000 lbs apiece) every week per pen.

[ SamandJonathan - 184 - 07:52:06 ]
WHEN IS THE NEXT POW-WOW IN THIS AREA. I WOULD LIKE TO GO.

[ Cibola - 185 - 07:52:10 ]

Some of the Indian tribes around included the Kiowa, Comanche, Plains, Apaches, and Osages.

RE: [missanthony] I have 27 computers on trying to listen to the field trip live. The picture is very fuzzy and is only brodadcasting at 34 kbps instead of 56. Help!
We are broadcasting at 20 kbps so that low end users can view the broadcast. The picture is naturally a little fuzzy as it is compressed to be played over a lowbandwidth stream.

[ BenChrisatValley - 190 - 07:53:55 ]
How many buffalo would a tribe kill at one time? And how did they do so?

[ Hannah_Wes_Clif - 191 - 07:56:12 ]
To Sam and Jonathan: Most feathers used were eagle feathers especially on headresses, etc. It was a great honor to earn eagle feathers. For a young boy to become a man, he had to capture an eagle.

[ Destinee - 192 - 07:56:24 ]

a cross between a bison and a domestic cow. They are bred to develop a better grazing anumal that still produced a lot of meat. Not many people do it any more because of the high mortality of the calves and cows and the first cross males are sterile.
