Homosexual men (HOS) and the use of condoms during oral and anal intercourse.

Sarna S, Valle SL; International Conference on AIDS.

Int Conf AIDS. 1990 Jun 20-23; 6: 264 (abstract no. S.C.702).

University of Helsinki, Finland

OBJECTIVE: To determine the effect of personal counselling on the use of condoms during oral/anal intercourses practised by HOS. METHODS: Serial interviews (1-6) of HOS, enrolled during 1983-1985 and followed up during 1983-1989 in Helsinki, Finland. At every visit, closely-argued practical advice was given to avoid mucosal contact during sex. The condom use was defined by the study participant as never (I), occasionally (II), always (III), or not needed (IV)=not practicing such sex. RESULTS: The percentages of condom use was either during oral or anal sex at subsequent visits (V) during 1983-1989 were the following: TABULAR DATA, SEE ABSTRACT VOLUME. CONCLUSION: Repeated, closely-argued personal counselling together with growing media coverage during 1983-1989 clearly increased the use of condoms during anal sex but not when oral sex was practised. To promote this should further reduce the risk of HIV transmission.
