I'm not sure how you have only what you need and still have a bzImage
that's 1.5MB. My 2.2.9 is only 650KB, and I have all I need and more.
Did you try configuring more things as modules instead of building them
into the kernel? Just about all filesystems except for ext2 should
probably be modules, and sound support, tape drives, etc. are good
things to make modules.
