Notes

  1. Identified sire is required
  2. Check lactation number (L), cow that has no first lactation is not usable, except for cows born in the preceding 10 years, a PTA is calculated using her parities less than or equal to 5
  3. Check days in milk (DIM) (if a record in progress less than 40 DIM is not usable).
  4. Check usability code. Any code with the second digit greater or equal to 8 is not usable. Click here for description and explanation of mask codes.
  5. Check type of test (TOT) (of ALL the records of the cow in question). Are TOT above 31? AIPL does not currently send TOT above 31 cows to the breed associations and/or DRPC's TOT above 31 (provided the herd meets certain criteria) is suitable for PTA, but the breed associations may show registered cows as having no PTA.
  6. Check termination code (TC) (termination code 9 is not usable).
  7. A cow may have an evaluation herself, but not contribute to her sire if she has no management group mates (MGM) or all the MGM are by the same sire as the cow.   This may happen if cow is in  a small herd or the only cow of her breed in a herd of a different breed (i.e. one Jersey in a herd of 500 Holsteins), she will be unusable. Use "Get contemporary animal information"  to find contemporaries, and "Get bull daughter list" so see which ones contributed to their sire's evaluation.
  8. Check for cross bred (sire and/or dam show a different breed), breeds combinations accepted follow:
Number  Cow breed  Sire breed  Dam breed
AYR  AYR  AYR
AYR(36)  AYR  AYR Grade or UNK
BS  BS  BS
BS(36)  BS  BS GRADE or UNK
GUE  GUE  GUE

13  R&W  R&W, HOL, or any Breed  R&W, HOL, or any Breed grade
14  VIP  SBAC  VIP, GRADE, or UNK SBAC

Note:

36 - Upgrade from a grade
37 - Upgrade from a grade or upgrade from 36

Number 8 - QHB = Qualified Holstein Herdbook, IHF = Identified Holstein Female
Number 11 - Either the sire or the dam MUST be a fully registered MS. Otherwise, getcow will return 'cow not evaluated'.
Number 12 - HOL for sire or dam
Number 14 - SBAC = Same breed as cow.

Cross breeds are allowed in numbers 12 & 13.

If a cow has no data?

1. Use "Get all animal ID "aliases"" to see if the preferred code is 1 for a different ID.  Rerun your query with that ID.

2. If still no data check "error information" query to see if the cows records were returned by the Animal Improvement Programs Laboratory (AIPL). If there is no error for this cow, e-mail AIPL with the details at inquiry@aipl.arsusda.gov or Fax 301-504-8092. Please include the herd code, cow, sire, and date of birth.

If a bull has no PTA?

1. Use "Get bull evaluation information" to see what is available.

2. He may have an evaluation, but it was not sent to the owner.
