Int Conf AIDS. 2002 Jul 7-12; 14: abstract no. WePeG7015.

Network - SMI Foundation, Vlirudhunagar - 626 001, India

ISSUES: Tremendous efforts have been taken by various NGOs in different places of TamilNadu, India in the prevention and control of STD/HIV/AIDS among various target population supported by many funding agencies. Despite this the spread of HIV/AIDS still threatens TamilNadu, India. Gross root areas are concentrated by both government and international agencies for reasons seeming logical. But the reality is that the vulnerable and high risk groups are in the grass root areas who are not even aware of STD/HIV/AIDS. DESCRIPTION: Network-SMI with its experience has changed its existing system through modifying revolutionary actions. So, it with the financial support of UNAIDS had identified and selected 100 Ngos who have been involving in community development activities in the grass root areas like Blue Metal, Quarry Workers, Tribals, Plantain grow workers, MSMs, Gem cutting workers, Plantation workers,, Rural adolescents, Religious leaders, Migrants, Hostel cocks, Rural Elected Body members,/leaders, Self help groups, RIMPs, Construction labourers, Weavers, Advocates Union.much coneentrated by government or others international agencies. With the main purpose to high light the targets yet to be concentrated on HIV/AIDS 100 NGOs were supported with a minimum amount Rs.3000/- to observe World AIDS Day 2001. The highly co-operation of the NGOs helped the programme to be reached the unreached areas and target. This paper will integrate the districts practices and philosophy to support a model which can be used for community case and support. LEASON LEARNED: Wholistic and integnated interventions on AIDS alone can slow down the HIV infection. RECOMMENDATION: The government and International agencies should adopt such interventions in the near future. Government cum NGO co ordination should be flexible and in a networking perspective. International efforts to be placed on this.
