Projcet SIDA/HMY, Anvers, Belgium.

Objectives: To determine the problematical of borderline negative result and to assess the sense of indeterminate result. Methods: Among 4777 patients were tested for HIV in the LAB of Project SIDA from January to December 1995. A clinical survey was completed for each patient. The result was considered borderliner negative by Elisa when it was above the cut off but included in 20 % of the optical density of that cut off and by rapid test when the spot was less than weak positive control. (Borderline HIV Spot = B.H.S). The confirmatory test (Western Blot = W.B.) was performed for all those samples. The result was indeterminate when any bands was present but pattern didn't meet criteria of positivity. Result: (table: see text) Conclusion: More than 50% of borderline negative result present at least one sign of HIV. All patient with borderline result had an indeterminate result by Western Blot. Patient with Borderline negative result of Elisa must be followed during more or less six months.
