  • Norway and the United States - online version of a general presentation booklet published by the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, September 2000

  • The Promise of America - the English language version of the National Library's multimedia database about the Norwegian emigration to the U.S (there is also a Norwegian language version (Det løfterike landet) of the database) This is a valuable and fascinating resource for researchers and anyone with an interest in the Norwegian-American heritage. The U.S. Embassy is proud to be among the institutions that provided financial support for this worthy project.

  • Norway in America - the Thor M. Andersen bibliography - this fabulous resource is a must for anyone interested in Norwegian-American history. TMA is an on-line bibliography of documents printed between 1825 and 1930 by and/or about Norwegian emigrants to the US and Canada. The bibliography lists references to books and brochures as well as to articles in newspapers and periodicals published throughout the world mainly in English and Norwegian. TMA also contains biographical information about the authors of most documents. There are over 50,000 entries in the bibliography. The TMA bibliography is one component of the National Library's multimedia database of Norwegian emigration history (see "Promise of America" above)

  • The Spirit of the Vikings - the National Library's database of Norwegian radio broadcasts from the United States during the war years, 1941-47

  • The Norwegian Emigrant Museum - a museum and research center near Hamar that works "to collect, preserve, research, and disseminate the history of Norwegian emigration, immigration and return migration".

  • A Select Bibliography of Works - Norwegian-American Immigration and Local History

  • American Family History Immigration Center - a searchable database that contains records on the 22 million passengers and ship crew members who passed through Ellis Island between 1892 and 1924. In addition to a basic passenger record (name, ethnicity, place of residence, age, marital status, ship of travel, etc.), users can also view a copy of the original ship manifest (a text version is also available), and even a picture of the ship travelled on! Free registration is required to use the database and a paid membership to use some of the other features at the site, such as creating a public scrapbook (these will be available for free viewing).

Norwegian-American Organizations and Internet Sites

  • National Library - the Norwegian National Library has prepared this wonderful overview of Norwegian-American organizations, insitutions and associations on both sides of the Atlantic.

  • The Norse Federation (Nordmannsforbundet) - home office (Oslo) of a worldwide organization with local chapters in over 25 countries. Its purpose is to to strengthen ties between Norwegians at home and abroad, their descendants, and friends of Norway.

  • Norwegian-American Foundation - the mission of the Norwegian-American Foundation is "to further cooperation among all Norwegian-American organizations and to strengthen the ties between Norway and people throughout North America, who through ancestry and interest have a special relationship with Norway." The website includes a searchable database of almost 900 North American Norwegian-American organizations, a free bimonthly newsletter (by email) and a calendar of events around North America that Norwegian-Americans would be interested in.

  • The Norway America Association - The Norway-America Association has as its aim to strengthen the bonds between Norway and North America by encouraging and stimulating cultural and practical cooperation

  • Sons of Norway--website of the largest organization of persons of Norwegian ancestry in United States, Sons of Norway site promotes Norwegian heritage with its online "storehouse of information about all things Norwegian".

  • The Norwegian-American Bygdelagenes Fellesrad--an organization of emigrant descendents from specific areas of Norway living in America, the Fellesrad seeks to preserve and strengthen bonds with its ancestral community in Norway.

  • The American Scandinavian Foundation--a publicly supported, nonprofit organization promoting international understanding through educational and cultural exchange between the United States and Scandinavia. The Foundation awards fellowships and grants to Americans for advanced study or research in the Scandinavian countries and to Scandinavians for advanced study in the U.S.

  • The American Chamber of Commerce in Norway - an organization representing the interests of the Norwegian American business community. Merged in 1999 with the Norwegian-American Chamber of Commerce, and membership now represents over 90% of total U.S. investments in Norway. Further development of trade and commerce between the U.S. and Norway through sharing common business interests and experiences,  lobbying all levels of government, and providing exceptional networking opportunities.

  • American Coordinating Council of Norway - the ACCN is a non-profit council of 22 American and Norwegian-American cultural service clubs and organizations. The ACCN facilitates communication among these organizations and promotes projects and events of mutual interest, including coordinating the annual American Independence Day celebration in Frogner Park.
