NASA To Test Automated Drilling Rig in Arctic Crater In Mars Analog Mission –
NASA scientists plan to drill someday into the surface of Mars to look for water and signs of possible life. So, scientists are developing an automated, unmanned drill rig that can operate totally on its own, unsupervised for hours at a time.

HAUGHTON-MARS PROJECT ANNOUNCES MEDIA FIELD VISIT OPPORTUNITY
HMP-2000 is a NASA-led international field research program centered on the scientific study of the Haughton impact crater and its surroundings, Devon Island, Nunavut, Arctic Canada. "The Haughton-Mars Project provides an opportunity for synergistic studies among team members composed of planetary scientists, geologists, biologists and engineers from information technologies, robotics, human exploration and human factors," said Dr. Kelly Snook, NASA HMP Project Manager at NASA Ames Research Center, in California's Silicon Valley.

Mars Drill --
A Mars prototype drill was evaluated at NASA Ames Research Center, Moffett Field, Calif., before shipment to Haughton Crater on Devon Island in Canada's Nunavut Territory north of Ontario and Quebec. The device will bore into permafrost and broken rock in the crater in the Canadian arctic from July 14 to July 29, 2006.
