The profile of 218 new HIV positives admitted into 10 bedded AIDS care centre of the family planning association of India madurai branch during 2002-03.

Background: The 10 bedded AIDS Care Centre of Family Planning Association of India Madurai Branch provides treatment for opportunistic infections for HIV Positives. The AIDS Care Centre is situated within the 105 bedded hospital premises, where family planning services are being rendered. Description: Information collected from the HIV Positives during admission is recorded, that helps the Counsellor for preparing counselling plans. During 2002-03, 218 new HIV Positives were admitted, comprised of 117 (53.7%) males and 101 (46.3%) females. Married are 198 (90.8%) and 20 (9.2%) are single. From urban are 98 (45%) and 120 (55%) are from rural. The occupation of the HIV positives shows 28 (12.8%) Drivers; 45 (20.6%) housewives; 93 (42.7%) contract labours; 25 (11.5%) Petty business; 10 (4.6%) office staff, 8 (3.7%) WIPs and 9 (4.1%) unemployed. Regarding their age, 7 (3%) are between 0-14 years; 117 (53%) are within 15-34 years and 94 (44%) are 35 years and above. Majority of them 95.8% got infected through Sexual contacts and 3.2% from Parents. During admission, 168 (77%) of the HIV Positives had attendants with them, while 50 (33%) had no attendant. Among attendants, relatives and friends of PLWHAs constitute 43.5%, mothers recorded as 33.3% and spouses found to be 23.2%. Result: The epidemic has captured all sectors of the Community and spread into the rural area. The Spouses and relatives of PLWHAs show a sign of accepting HIV/AIDS. The provision of services to PLWHAs within the family planning hospital has not affected the regular inflow of clients to Family Planning services. Conclusion Strategic interventions on HIV/AIDS should reach rural areas. The health providers of rural area should offer services to HIV/AIDS.
