Admission to the U.S. District Court of New Jersey

An attorney must be a member of the New Jersey State Court before he/she can be admitted to the U. S. District Court of New Jersey. They are not automatically admitted to the U. S. District Court of New Jersey upon admission to the New Jersey State Court.The attorney must complete an attorney roll card and have the oath administered by an individual authorized to administer oaths. (An attorney, judge or notary). The person may be an official of any jurisdiction. An attorney roll card can be obtained at one of the three vicinages :

The fee is $200.00 payable to Clerk, U. S. District Court. Firm check, personal check or money order is acceptable) The roll card and fee must be forwarded to:

The admission date is the first working day of the following month in which the card is received . A certificate of admission is forwarded shortly thereafter.

CERTIFICATE OF GOOD STANDING

A written request stating the attorney's full name, social security number, date of birth and approximate date of admission is required. The fee is $15.00 payable to Clerk, U. S. District Court, 50 Walnut Street Newark, New Jersey 07101 Attn: Attorney Admissions. A stamped return envelope is also required. The certificate is mailed within two working days.

ATTORNEY NAME CHANGE

An attorney wishing to change his/her name due to marriage, divorce, or court order must submit a letter requesting same to:

attn: Attorney Admissions. If the attorney wishes to have a new certificate evidencing the name change there is an additional fee of $20.00. (Procedure amended 6/6/05)

PRO HAC VICE

An attorney admitted pro hac vice before the United States District Court for the District of New Jersey is required to make payment of $150 on each admission payable to the Clerk, USDC, and is also required to make payment to : the New Jersey Lawyers’ Fund for Client Protection (The NJ Lawyers’ Fund for Client Protection can be reached at (609)292-8079. According to Local Civil Rule Local 101.1, local counsel must file papers, enter appearances for parties, sign stipulations or sign and receive payments on judgments, decrees or orders.
