Abstract DESIGN AND COST INFORMATION ARE PRESENTED ON BOTH POST- TENSIONED AND PRETENSIONED SIMPLE SPAN STRUCTURES IN FLORIDA. ACCELERATION IN USE OF PRESTRESSED CONCRETE CAME FROM HIGHWAY CONSTRUCTION PROGRAMMING REQUIRING MANY LONG TRESTLE BRIDGES, SUGGESTIVE OF MULTIPLE-USE STANDARD SHORT SPANS OVER BROAD STREAMS AND WIDE COASTAL INLETS, AND ESTABLISHMENT IN THE AREA OF SEVERAL LARGE PRETENSIONING PLANTS FOR STRUCTURAL CONCRETE UNITS. IT WAS CONCLUDED THAT PRESTRESSING HAS BECOME A FIRMLY ESTABLISHED PRACTICE AND ONE THAT WILL BECOME INCREASINGLY IMPORTANT IN BRIDGE AND BUILDING CONSTRUCTION.
