October 17, 2006. William Easterly, Professor of Economics at New York, gave a lecture on “We are Saving the World to Death – Towards a More Professional Management of Foreign Aid” at the German National Librray. Organized by the U.S. Consulate, Campus Verlag, the Hesse Center for political Education (HLZ), the National library and the German-British Society, the event drew an audience of over 300. Among them were over 50 professionals from GTZ and KFW, Germany’s major institutions in the field of foreign aid, who felt encouraged by the conclusions of Easterly’s empirical study that the traditional financial hand-outs had done more harm than good and that successful aid had to be made accountable, results-oriented and compatible with actual local needs to the exclusion of national governments. |
