    For over 100 years, the American Automobile Association (AAA) has been serving the American motoring public with information on automobiles, travel, and financial needs. AAA also has an extensive list of highway safety information available to the public, some of it free of charge and some for sale. In addition, AAA offers in-person driver education services to its members, such as the 55 Alive program.

    Some publications available free on-line from AAA are: Safety Tips for Breakdowns, Help Your Car, “Keep it Cool,” Vacation Safety Tips, Kids Flying Solo, Know Before You Go, Tire Safety Guide, Road Rage: Avoiding Aggressive Driving, and Gas Watchers Guide.     Established in 1996 under the umbrella of the National Safety Council, the Air Bag & Seat Belt Safety Campaign is an intensive education and action campaign by a public/private partnership of automobile manufacturers, insurance companies, child safety seat manufacturers, occupant restraint manufacturers, government agencies, health professionals, and child health safety organizations. The Campaign’s goal is to educate the public on how to maximize the lifesaving capabilities of air bags while minimizing the risk, and to increase the proper use of safety belts and child safety seats.

    The following educational materials are available:

    Fact Sheet and Press Releases: Seat Belt Use Among Youth, Enforcement: High-Visibility Enforcement of Seat Belt Laws Saves Lives; Child Passenger Safety; About the AB&SBSC; Selected State Campaign Highlights; and Safety Belt Enforcement Questions and Answers.     The mission of ACTS is to educate the general public and targeted audiences about technology-related safety issues and to provide safety-related services to ACTS’ members. Initially, ACTS served as an events-oriented umbrella group which publicized the popularity and success of safety belts and mandatory belt use laws. With the passage of time, ACTS expanded its scope of activities to include safety belts, airbags, anti-lock brakes, child passenger safety, and preventing rollover crashes and injuries. ACTS’ members include DaimlerChrysler Corporation, Ford Motor Company, General Motors Corporation, Mazda North American Operations, Nissan North America, Inc., Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A., Inc., Volkswagen of America, Inc., and the Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers, Inc.

    Brochures: What You Need To Know About Airbags. Explains how the airbag system works; what to expect from airbags in a crash; airbag contact injuries; and the need to use safety belts in airbag-equipped vehicles. First 250 free, additional brochures 15¢ each.

    Videos: Emergency Procedures for Airbag Equipped Vehicles. This video is the updated version of the popular “Airbags— A Crash Course for Rescue Personnel.” It provides important information for all emergency personnel who may have to work in or around airbag-equipped vehicles in crash or fire situations. It describes how airbags function, the various types of airbags and proper procedures for dealing with these systems in many types of situations. $15.00 per video.

    The mission of Farm Safety 4 Just Kids is to prevent farm-related childhood injuries, health risks and fatalities. The following educational materials are available.

    Brochures: Cawshus the Crow on ... No Riders! for adolescents who are just beginning to drive and the dangers of being an extra rider. Cawshus the Crow on Rural Roads-Safe Roads for early adolescents on the dangers of rural roadways. Keep on Track for farm safety leaders (adults and adolescents) to teach the concepts of tractor safety to kids. Cost: $0.23 each.

    Fact Sheet: Rural Roadway Safety includes tips to stay safe as a farm machinery operator and a person sharing the rural roads with farm machinery operators. Cost: Free, black and white matte for duplication.

    The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety is a nonprofit research and communications organization wholly supported by auto insurers.

    Brochures: A variety of educational brochures are available such as Beginning Drivers: Helping Them Make It Home, Graduated Driver Licensing: Questions & Answers, Kids and Airbags, and About Your Airbags. Some materials are available in Spanish. Cost: Free, up to 100 copies.

    Videotapes: The Insurance Institute also offers videotapes supporting the information in the brochures and other subjects, such as Reducing Your Risks in the Crash, Making Safer Roads and Sober Thoughts on Drinking and Driving.     The National SAFE KIDS Campaign recognizes that children living in rural areas are at significantly greater risk of unintentional injury-related death than children living in urban areas. The organization focuses not only on vehicle safety, but fire, drowning and alternate modes of transportation.

    Fact Sheet: The National SAFE KIDS Campaign has a Rural Injury fact sheet, Safe Kids Buckle Up brochure, a step-by-step guide to the proper use of child restraints (available in English and Spanish). Cost: $15 per 100.

    Video and Poster Series: A Safe Kids Buckle Up video and poster series also are available. Cost: video, $150 per 25; poster series, $19.

    The National Safety Belt Coalition offers a number of publications and activities for adults and children.

    Publications: Patterns for Partnership: A Guide to Creating and Nurturing Grassroots Coalitions and Cutting the Cost of Traffic Crashes are some of the publications for adults. Cost: One copy free; limited quantities are free to members; $3 for 2-4 pieces and $6 for 5-9 pieces for non-members.

    Safe-T Rangers on Vacation is a publication for children highlighting the importance of traffic safety. The booklet includes games, quizzes and other activities interwoven with important safety belt messages. Cost: Free to members; $3 for 1 - 4 pieces, $5 for 5 - 50 pieces, and $7.50 for 51 - 75 copies for non-members.

    Games: The Buckle Up Scrambler is a game for children highlighting the importance of safety belts and booster seats. Cost: first five boxes free to members; one box is $6, two boxes are $8 and three boxes are $10 for nonmembers. Each box contains 36 pieces.

    The Buckle Up Game is an educational board game that teaches children aged 5 years and older that it is necessary to buckle up and ride in the back seat-no matter how short the ride. Cost: Free to members; $3 for 1-4 pieces, $5 for 5 - 50 pieces, and $7.50 for 51 - 100 pieces for non-members.
