Closing
The Main Injector is moving away from flash-display orbits for closing injected beam and going to the phase/amplitude (TBT) method similar to the BLT.  The main push for this is the BPM upgrade.

To this end Guan Wu has modified the injection closure page to perform TBT closure for beam injected from Booster as well as for Tev reverse tune up.  This will allow us to close Tev reverse protons while the MI-60N BPM house is upgraded.

We will be using the new version for TeV tune up shortly, but you can use the new version (found on W78) for closing Booster injection at this time.  I works very much like the TBT closures for antiproton transfers into the MI.

If you have any problems or questions please direct them to me or Guan Wu.

New Pumps
In case you have not noticed, we have acquired two new portable sump pumps. They are the Tuff-One pumps manufactured by Grindex, and they replace the old Grindex Minex pumps that no longer work.

Specifications:
  • Can pump water to a height of 50 feet
  • Can be placed 33 feet below the water (Although we have bigger problems if we have water that deep)
  • Runs off of a standard wall outlet
  • Weighs 30 pounds
  • Equipped with a float (float can be tied up for continuous running)
  • No control box to worry about, just plug and go
  • Pump can run dry. It is guaranteed not to burn up if it does run dry
  • Equipped with a low suction collar
  • Uses a two-inch hose
As you will notice, the hose connection is threaded. John Crawford is ordering adapters that will allow us to use our quick connects. He is also ordering some new two-inch hoses since some of what we have is getting worn.

The pumps are stored in the storage room between the light and dark side back rooms. I will hang a set of operating manuals beside the pumps.

Hot
musselsTodd Johnson

Is it hot in here, or is it just me?
With the hottest days of summer upon us, the cooling systems for the machines are being taxed to their limits once more. If we lose an air conditioner or pond pump, we can quickly get into a condition where we are in immediate danger of losing a store.

Of course everyone already knows this. (blah, blah, nag, nag...)

There is another factor that is making this even more hazardous however, that of seemingly flaky alarms screens. We know that there have been several worrisome instances where an alarm will post on some screens but not all. For instance, the CC may pay close attention to his alarms (he has nothing else to do, right?) but if his screen locks up, then his careful vigilance is all for nothing.

I would like to suggest that once the dust settles after a shot and the sequencers are done taking over comfort displays, we try to keep the electronics room and LCW temperature SAs running in some convenient slot. This will make it easy to tell at a glance if something is getting away from us. It's a bit of extra effort but until we can feel fully confident that the alarms are current and every screen is updating, I think you'll agree that it's a small price to pay compared to losing a store because, as some might interpret it, "The operators missed another alarm again."

Much Ado About Nothing
This play is about love, honor, and friendship and just how easy it is to trip those things up.

Come see the play for free at the Batavia, Peg Bond Center (across from the Batavia government building) on Sunday, July 23 at 6 PM, or come to Naperville for the performance at Knoch Knolls (far south side) on Friday, July 28 at 7 PM.  Come early, bring chairs, bug spray, and have a picnic dinner.

However, if you'd like to have a waiter bring you food and drinks, perhaps you'd be willing to pay $10 for a ticket to see the play at Payton's Roundhouse in Aurora.  The two performances that we have left are on July 25 and August 1 at 7:30 PM.  The Roundhouse is offering special play and dinner ticket combinations.  Call the Roundhouse at 630-892-0034 for more details or visit their Web site at http://www.americasbrewpub.com/.
