Abstract Described is the construction and design changes which are being carried out on the twin-tube Cairn Tunnel which will provide a major new corridor from Hong Kong Island via the Eastern Harbour Crossing and Kowloon right up to the Chinese border. The original design called for two parallel tunnels with 25 pedestrian cross-passages linking them and two vertical ventilation shafts more than 200m deep sunk from the surface. A later look at the design plans showed that great savings could be obtained by replacing the vertical ventilation shafts with inclined adits. This decision enabled eight tunnel faces to be excavated simultaneously. unreinforced in-situ linings were also installed. The ventilation adits will allow fresh air to be fed into the tunnel and a prearranged system will control airflow in the tunnels in the event that a fire breaks out. Evacuation of the tunnels will be through pedestrian passageways to the adjacent tunnel and fire fighting vehicles will be able to stop in the adjacent tunnel to dispatch needed equipment.
