Issue: Peer Health Educators (PHEs) in the HIV/High Transmission Area (HTA) Intervention project conduct educational sessions but they lack appropriate health learning materials (HLM) for reinforcing their verbal messages. Project: The Development of HIV HLM for the HIV/HTA Intervention project which involves 5 implementing NGO thoughout Tanzania is a process that passes through several stages depending on the material. First is the planning stage during which HLMs to be developed, themes or educational messages/slogans are identified with the collaboration of target groups. Second is the field data collection and analysis or pretest of educational messages/slogans. The third stage involves materials production and pretest. Fourth, the materials are distributed according to a worked out formular. The last stage is evaluation conducted to determine areas for improvement or worthiness of HLMs. Results: The HIV/HTA Intervention project has recorded success in disseminating AIDS preventive education. A variety of appropriate HLMs with educational messages addressing risky behaviours and misconceptions have been produced and distributed to NGOs and are now available and being used by target groups. The HLMs consist of newslet ters, booklets, posters, stickers, key holders, carrier bags, T-shirts, caps, Penis Models and flip charts. The HLMs have given popularity and credibility to the PHEs work. Through the PHE newsletter, the PHEs have got a communication forum whereby they exchange experiences and air their opinions on various issues pertaining to their work. Lessons Learned: HLM development for specific target groups is beneficial as the HLM tend to be more practical and usable. However, HLMs like posters and stickers need to be changed periodically to avoid monotony and to address upcoming risky behaviours and misconceptions. Yet, for project sustainability purposes, there is need to explore possibilities of using local resources and materials for HLM production.
