TIS Founder Participates in Okinawa English Language Programs

Tokyo International School Founder Patrick Newell leads a group of teachers in training at the Okinawa Prefectural Education Center on a modeling exercise in regards to aspects of immersion education. 

On March 8-10, Tokyo International School and Japan International Education Center Founder Patrick Newell visited Okinawa to participate in a number of programs re English education.

 On March 8, he gave a lecture on “Immersion Education: Think
Globally, Act Locally” at the Okinawa Prefectural Education Center to 17 teachers who 
will teach in an immersion school being established by the Okinawa Prefectural Government. 

The following day, he met and offered advice to Nago City officials re their plans to establish a bilingual school in northern Okinawa. Before returning to Tokyo, Newell also participated in courtesy calls with Public Affairs Officer Frank Stanley on Vice Governor Hirotaka Makino and Okinawa Prefectural Board of Education Superintendent Yoei Nakasone. He also had a working lunch with Okinawa International Exchange Executive Director Akira Yamauchi.
