New GI Bill Signed into Law

The GI Bill for the 21st Century became law yesterday when the President signed HR 2642, the Iraq/Domestic Priorities Supplemental Appropriations Bill. In addition to emergency appropriations, the bill provides funding for the new GI bill and unemployment benefits.

The new GI bill restores full, four-year college scholarships to veterans of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars to help make them part of an economic recovery like the veterans of World War II. It will give our returning troops the tools to succeed after military service.

Current GI educational benefits only pay about 70% of a public college education. This new bill will cover 100% of the cost of tuition, fees, and books of the most expensive in-state public school. Veterans will also be able to transfer educational benefits to family members.

HR 2642 also extends unemployment benefits for more than 3 million Americans by providing up to 13 weeks of extended unemployment benefits in every state to workers who have exhausted regular unemployment benefits.

If you need assistance with Veterans or other benefits, please contact my Richmond District Office at (510) 262-6500.
