Encore orchestra to perform at ANL-E

The Encore Chamber Orchestra will perform its spring concert Sunday, May 16, at Argonne-East.

The Chicago Symphony Orchestra's top musicians and alumni make up the orchestra, which will be joined by pianist Stephanie Wu for a performance of Bloch's "Concerto Grosso No.1."

Ginastera's "Variaciones Concertantes" andBeethoven's "Eighth Symphony" will complete the program, which will be presented at 3 p.m. at the Advanced Photon Source Conference Center, Building 401.

The concert is sponsored by the Taiwanese Association of America and Chinese Fine Arts Society and will showcase the talents of two Taiwanese artists -- Wu and Ya-Hui Wang, assistant conductor of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra.

Wu, who is 12 years old and a resident of Naperville, recently performed Saint-Saens' Carnival of the Animals with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. She has been awarded top honors in many piano competitions and has performed on WNIB radio.

Wang is the first woman to be named to a conducting post with Detroit.

The Encore Chamber Symphony concert is the final concert of the Arts at Argonne 1998-99 series. Tickets are $12, $8 for students and seniors. Call (630) 554-3504 or (312) 939-2207, ext. 24, for tickets and information.

15,000 visit for open house

Argonne-East opened its gates May 1 and hosted about 15,000 visitors for "Discovery 2000: Illinois Science and Technology Expo."

Visitors saw more than 70 exhibits, science demonstration tours and hands-on activities. The expo was presented as part of Project Millennium, a cultural and learning initiative taking place in Chicago and Illinois during 1999.

The "Weird Science" demonstrations -- as seen on the David Letterman show -- drew standing-room-only crowds.

Other popular demonstrations included Mr. G's Cool Chemistry, the Magic of Electricity and glass-blowing demonstrations by fourth-generation master glassblower Joe Gregar (CHM).

Under Project Millennium, more than 180 organizations throughout Illinois will present nearly 1,000 exhibits, performances, festivals, and educational programming during 1999.

For more information about Project Millennium, call (312) 322-8889.

Working Safely

Argonne employees' most dangerous activity: commuting

The most dangerous activity in an average Argonne employees' workday takes place before he or she even enters the lab or office. It's commuting.

Deaths and injuries resulting from motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death for people from six to 27 years old, according to the U.S. Department of Transportation's National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). In 1997, 41,967 people were killed in the 6,764,000 crashes reported to police. More than three million people were injured. (All statistics in this article are from 1997).

To lower the risk of death and injury on the road:

Wear a seat belt. NHTSA estimates that seat belts have saved 100,998 lives since 1975. Although every driver has been urged to buckle up, almost one-third still don't.

Seat belt use in personal vehicles is not just the law, it's part of the job: the laboratory's ES&H Manual requires seat belt use on site. DOE order 440.1 requires belts when operating government vehicles.

Make sure children are securely buckled up. NHSTA estimates 312 children under age five were saved as a result of child restraint use in 1997. Children in rear-facing child seats should not be placed in the front seat of cars equipped with passenger-side air bags. Children 12 and under should sit in the rear seat away from the air bag.

NHTSA estimates that alcohol was involved in seven percent of all crashes but 38.5 percent of the fatal crashes in 1997. The conclusion is obvious.
