Sasan Bakhtiari (NDE Section) to take part in annual U.S. Frontiers of Engineering symposium

NE scientist Sasan Bakhtiari, Section Manager of the Non-Destructive Evaluation Section, is one of the 82 young engineers who have been selected to take part in the National Academy of Engineering's (NAE) 14th annual U.S. Frontiers of Engineering symposium (related NAE News Release).

The two-and-a-half day event will bring together engineers aged 30 to 45 who are performing exceptional engineering research and technical work in a variety of disciplines. The participants — from industry, academia, and government — were nominated by fellow engineers or organizations and chosen from more than 230 applicants.

The symposium will be hosted Sept. 18-20 by Sandia National Laboratories at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque and will examine emerging nanoelectric devices, cognitive engineering, drug delivery systems and understanding and countering the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction.

NE congratulates Dr. Bakhtiari for this distinguished achievement.

About Dr. Sasan Bakhtiari

Dr. Bakhtiari has been actively involved for over fifteen years with applied research in areas of electromagnetic (EM) guided wave and radiating structures, induction sensor technology, signal processing and analytical/numerical modeling. He has carried out theoretical and applied work on microwave (MW) and eddy current nondestructive evaluation (NDE) techniques, active/passive radar remote sensing, and advanced signal processing and data analysis. He has designed and implemented various non-contact EM sensors, instrumentation, and software for on-line inspection applications.

Since joining Argonne, he has participated in various projects connected with the employment of advanced EM sensor technology for various applications. He has acted as a task leader and the technical point of contact on projects sponsored by the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC), Department of Energy (DOE), and the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI). He has is also the principle investigator on projects sponsored by the Department of Defense (DOD) and the National Aeronautics and Space administration (NASA).

Dr. Bakhtiari is the author of more than 90 journal and conference publications, technical reports, and chapter contributions. He is also the inventor/co-inventor of four U.S./International patents related to non-contact EM sensor technology.

He is the recipient of two R&D100 awards (most recently in 2007), a Senior Member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, IEEE and a member of Eta Kapa Nu (HKN), Engineering Honor Society, CSU chapter.

His current research interests include active and passive microwave, RF, and induction sensing technologies for industrial, medical and scientific applications.
