Hello and welcome to another Aerospace Team Online QuestChat! Our special
guest today is Aerospace Engineer Craig Hange from NASA's Ames Research
Center in California. Craig will be in the chatroom ready to take your questions
at 10 am, PDT (1 pm, EDT). Craig's job is very interesting and historical
so be sure to read his bio BEFORE the chat begins -- http://quest.arc.nasa.gov/aero/team/hange.html

RE: [mike] hey i need some information
can you help me?
Hi Mike! Today's chat doesn't start until 11 am ,PDT (about 45 minutes
from now...). If you can't participate then, go ahead and submit your
questions now and I will hold them in my chat queue until Craig arrives
in the chat room. At that time, I will post them.
[ Sandy/NASAChatHost
- 6 - 09:42:19 ]
RE: [mike] if i stay on will i be
tranferred to the chat room?
Mike: You're already on and in the chat room. I'm just holding all questions/comments
that are coming in now, before the chat begins, in my moderator's chat
room. When Craig arrives and the chat begins, your questions will all
be posted as soon as you send them.
[ Sandy/NASAChatHost
- 8 - 09:47:33 ]
RE: [mike] So this isn't like a rea
chatroom where every one is in the chatroom?
Yes, it is exactly the same as a real chat room because it is a real chat
room! You happen to be the first one in the room as the chat doesn't start
for another 15 minutes. Since you're the first, there's no one else to
dialog with except me! In the NASA chat rooms there is always a science
expert, a moderator and then all the people (teachers, students, parents,
etc.) who sign up in advance for the chat.

RE: [Joe-Mr.Robles/ImperialValleyCollege] Hello
Everyone!
Hi Joe and welcome! Do you have some questions for Craig today?
[ Joe-Mr.Robles/ImperialValleyCollege - 35
- 10:06:21 ]
Yes, I am college freshman, in aerospace egineering. How long did it take
you to get your B.S. in AE?
[ CraigHange/AerospaceEngineer
- 36 - 10:06:38 ]
Well Mike, I think the important thing to remember about the use of aerospace
technology is that it has to be nearly flawless. We can't have airplanes
falling out of the sky (at least not very often) so they have to operate
at a level of reliability that was unheard of before the airplane was
invented. In my opinion aerospace technology affects the way we design
and engineer things to a level that is almost more important than the
airplanes themselves.

RE: [mike-GlenbardNorthHS] I am very sorry
mrs.sandy..:(
It's not a problem :-)
[ CraigHange/AerospaceEngineer
- 39 - 10:09:00 ]
Hi Joe. I attended the University of Cincinnati and got my BS in 5 years.
I went through the co-op program during that time and worked for 21 months
also.
[ Sandy/NASAChatHost
- 42 - 10:12:45 ]
RE: [mike-GlenbardNorthHS] well that wasn't
as detailed as i thought it would be... i guess i cant expect to much
can I. Thanks for ur help sir.. i appreciate it..
Mike: It sounds like you're trying to get Craig to do your homework assignment
for you! I think he gave you something to start with and you can do some
research on your own, using the web! Ask some more questions, but one
at a time.
[ CraigHange/AerospaceEngineer
- 44 - 10:13:24 ]
RE: [Joe-Mr.Robles/ImperialValleyCollege] what
is the outlook for new aerospace engineers?
I think it's getting better. I'm hoping the decline in aerospace research
has bottomed out and the industry and government realize there is still
more work to do. Aviation Week has printed some good articles and editorials
on this in the last couple of weeks.
[ mike-GlenbardNorthHS - 47 - 10:16:35 ]
no i mean there is alot more to my report then just the questions i asked
i have to do all about NASA.. backround info. all the branches and divisions
and this is the one i am having the most problem on.. i am sorry if it
seems like i was trying to get craig to do my homework.. but that was
bearly the tip of the iceburg i just asked.. if craig knows or u know
of any good websites i can use i can u please help me on this.. i am having
alot of trouble finding deep good answers to the questions listed to craig
[ Sandy/NASAChatHost
- 49 - 10:17:27 ]
RE: [mike-GlenbardNorthHS] is there any
other information u can give me.. about AEROSPACE? do u know of any good
websites that i can look up for somemore iformation on my questions?
Mike: Use any of the online search engines (Yahoo, AltaVista, etc.) and
do a search on aerospace. You can also go to NASA's homepage and do a
NASA search on aerospace -- http://www.nasa.gov. In addition, you can
go to our own NASA Quest site and research the Aerospace Team Online project
-- http://quest.arc.nasa.gov/aero

Mike you already know about the nasa web sites since your here. www.AviationNow.com
may also be a good site, its the link to Aviation Week and Space Technology
Magazine. They talk a lot about the uses and developments in aerospace.

RE: [mike-GlenbardNorthHS] i saw and thank
you both for answering my questions.. it has helped alot.. i have to go
to math now u both take care
You're welcome Mike! We're glad you could join us today! Good luck with
your report. Craig's chat will be archived later this afternoon. You will
find a link to it from his bio.

RE: [Joe-Mr.Robles/ImperialValleyCollege] How
does one get into becoming a test pilot?
Joe, you've picked a challenging path if you want to become a test pilot.
I suspect the most affordable path is still to enlist in the military
and become a pilot there. If you also have your degree, and were an aviator,
then getting into test pilot school will be easier. The other path is
to take civilian flight training, but that may cost you more $$ in the
long run, but you won't have to risk combat.

Goodbye Mike! Please let us know how we did with our chat today by filling
out a short chat survey at: http://quest.arc.nasa.gov/qchats/qchat-surveys
-- Thanks :-)
[ Sandy/NASAChatHost

Joe: Anymore questions for Craig? At this moment, you've got this great
aerospace engineer all to yourself! Ask away...
[ CraigHange/AerospaceEngineer
- 64 - 10:29:37 ]
As a general note to everyone, websites like www.boeing.com or www.lockheedmartin.com
are great places to start. You will read a lot of eye-candy since they
are trying to sell their products, but it will give you an idea of some
of the technology being developed.
[ CraigHange/AerospaceEngineer
- 65 - 10:32:08 ]
RE: [Joe-Mr.Robles/ImperialValleyCollege] Is
aeronautical egineering the same has aerospace egineering?
For the most part aeronautical and aerospace engineering are the same
thing. Someone with a good mechanical engineering degree can also be an
aerospace engineer if they take a couple of air-vehicle related type courses.
Electrical engineers have also been known to get into aero also especially
in the flight controls area
[ CraigHange/AerospaceEngineer
- 68 - 10:39:05 ]
RE: [Joe-Mr.Robles/ImperialValleyCollege] Are
there any outstanding aerospace egineering universities, that you could
mention? I'm a transfer student.
Well, I am biased to the University of Cincinnati, but MIT, Stanford (graduate
level only), Cal Berkeley, Ohio State, Virginia Tech, Florida State, Georgia
Tech, Cal Poly, Texas A & M, University of Kansas.... The list goes on
and on. Where is Imperial Valley College at, and do you want to stay nearby?
That might affect your choice more than anything.
[ Sandy/NASAChatHost
- 69 - 10:40:41 ]
Joe: Since you are the only one in the chat room, how about you spend
the next 5-10 minutes asking Craig all the questions you want, and then
we'll close the chat room and let Craig get back to work. Is this ok with
you?
[ CraigHange/AerospaceEngineer
- 71 - 10:45:15 ]
www.sae.org and www.aiaa.org are also some more web sites of interest.
SAE is the Society of Automotive Engineers and they have a strong aerospace
area, and AIAA is the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics.
[ CraigHange/AerospaceEngineer
- 73 - 10:46:18 ]
RE: [Joe-Mr.Robles/ImperialValleyCollege] Imperial
Valley College is as 2 hours east of San Diego,CA. Yes, perferably in
Southern California.
I'm not sure if San Diego State has a aero program. You might check there.
[ CraigHange/AerospaceEngineer
- 76 - 10:49:35 ]
RE: [Joe-Mr.Robles/ImperialValleyCollege] IS
there such a job as egineering aid?
There are many good engineering training programs that allow students
to work in industry. Many of the universities I listed send students out
to work.
[ Joe-Mr.Robles/ImperialValleyCollege - 77
- 10:49:44 ]
Bye Everyone!!!!!!! Thanks Craig!!!!!! Thanks Sandy!!!!!!!
[ Sandy/NASAChatHost
