Argonne rated `excellent' in annual DOE review

Argonne maintained its "excellent" rating in an annual DOE analysis of the laboratory's performance.

DOE's most recent Summary Appraisal Report covered fiscal year 1994, and is designed to provide constructive feedback to the University of Chicago and Argonne management. The appraisal is also used as a source of information for DOE officials making contracting decisions.

"Excellent," as defined by the report, means "exceeds the standards of performance. Although there may be room for improvement in some elements, better performance in all other elements more than offset this."

Among the significant achievements cited in the report were:

    * Progress on the Advanced Photon Source (APS), which remains on schedule and within cost. The report also noted the completion of accelerator component manufacturing, "substantial" progress in conventional facilities construction, and commissioning of major segments of the APS. The project's "aggressive" safety program drew praise, as did efforts to lower the cost of operations.

    * "Exemplary" technical progress during the final year of the Integral Fast Reactor program. DOE's appraisal noted a breakthrough in the design and testing of a high-capacity electrorefiner, a spinoff technology of the IFR program, which shows promise for treating spent reactor fuel.

    * Construction injury and accident rates "significantly below" the U.S. average due to excellent construction management. The report attributed the low rates to a "cultural change" towards construction safety.

Other areas of significant achievement included the findings of "commendable progress" by a DOE environment, safety and health progress assessment team, the Argonne Quality Management Initiative, efforts to bring Lake Michigan water to the laboratory, a DuPont Corp. safety review of the laboratory, and extension of the prime contract with the University of Chicago.

Most individual programmatic, support operations and administrative management areas received "excellent" ratings.

Stop sign planned for Water Tower Road

The yield sign for Argonne-East drivers traveling east on Water Tower Road will change to a stop sign in the near future.

The new stop sign will help reduce the threat of accidents at the intersection as contractors use Kearney, Water Tower and Outer Circle roads to get to the new Advanced Photon Source user residence facility.

    Seminar to help improve
    couples' communcation

The fifth seminar in the Argonne Family Series, "Couples Communication: Troubled Waters," will be held April 11, 1995, from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., in Argonne-East's Building 203 Auditorium.

Presenter William H. Hamilton is a faculty member and consultant with the Family Institute, an affiliate of Northwestern University. He , and has 20 years of experience as a California-licensed clinical psychologist, certified sex therapist, and marriage and family therapist.

Hamilton's talk will focus on several communication styles that characteristically lead to misunderstanding, anger, low self-esteem, withdrawal, blame, and lack of intimacy. He will offer suggestions for improvement and to increase understanding.

    Upcoming Family Series seminars include:

    * May 9 - Communicating Effectively

    * June 13 - Unhealthy Family Relations

    * July 11 - When Violence Hits Home

    * August 8 - Adolescence: Battleground or Sanctuary

All occur in the Building 203 Auditorium from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

    Golf league seeks players

The Des Plaines Valley Golf League is is looking for players to round out its teams.

The league plays Monday evenings at Old Oak Golf Course, 143rd Street and Parker Road. First tee-off time is 4:30 p.m. Players of all skill levels are invited to join in the handicapped competition.

For more information, call Glenn Kailus (PFS-BM) at ext. 2-7610.

Mouse jockeys can benefit from fitness talk

A seminar entitled "Fitness at the Terminal" will be held April 13, 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. in Room A-216 of Argonne East's Building 221 as part of Argonne's Preventive Health and Wellness Program.

The seminar is designed to help prevent strain in daily work through improved posture, exercises to help prevent fatigue, relaxation techniques and an overall fitness program.

Last call for outstanding service nominations

Nominations will be accepted through April 17 for Outstanding Service Awards, recognizing employees in support positions who have made exceptional contributions to the laboratory.

Full-time employees may be nominated for innovative ideas, suggestions, or inventions, for sustained leadership, exceptional reliability or dependability, a special act of heroism in an emergency or other valuable contributions to the work of the laboratory. Each award comprises an engraved plaque and $3,000. Up to four may be awarded.

Nomination forms are available through Human Resources. Completed nominations should be returned to Human Resources, with an information copy sent to the nominee's Ddivision Ddirector or Ddepartment Hhead.

For more information or to obtain a nomination form, call Human Resources at ext. 2-3151.

The awards program was established in 1983 by the University of Chicago Board of Governors for Argonne.

    Teachers invited to attend
    summer instititue at lab

High school teachers will have the opportunity this summer to attend four-week "Teacher Enhancement Institutes" planned by the Division of Educational programs.

Participants will develop hands-on experiments and demonstrations for classroom use, and learn how to use research-quality scientific equipment. As the school year begins, equipment will be loaned for classroom use and students can take field trips to the laboratory.

Twenty teachers can attend each of two institutes, to be held June 26-July 21 and July 24-Aug. 18.

More information and applications are available from DEP at ext. 2-9818 or by fax at ext. 2-3193. Application deadline is April 21.

    Geographic information systems
    in community development discussed

On Monday, April 10th, Peter Haas will present a seminar on applying Geographic Information Systems to community development and transportation planning.

Haas, a former researcher at FermiLab, is working at the Center for Neighborhood Technology. The one-hour seminar will be held in Argonne-East's Building 900, conference Room C-05, at noon. Those attending may bring their lunches.

For more information, call ext. 2-8688. Non-Argonne staff are welcome, but should call ahead.

`Magic Bus' to bring computers, software

The Silicon Graphics, Inc. "Magic Bus" will visit Argonne-East on Friday, April 14, and will be open to the public near the cafeteria parking lot.

The Magic Bus will demonstrate the entire range of Silicon Graphics computer equipment along with a wide range of applications dealing with World Wide Web authoring and serving, NFS file servers, scientific computing and visualization (including a new 300-megaflop desktop system), video teleconferencing, virtual reality, and real-time simulation.
