Abstract A new oil cleanup device, to be used primarily on inland waterways and bays, has been developed, and a prototype unit is now being readied for testing purposes. This device is constructed around an endless belt of porous, synthetic polymer that is continually squeezed to remove the oil it has picked up. The concept behind the design of the unit is explained, including the selection of the material for the endless belt. Results of tests using a model of the device are given, and a complete description of the prototype unit is also presented.
