OBJECTIVES: Establishing the occurrence and seriousness of acute viral hepatitis at small children presenting HIV risk factors. METHODS: The HIV infection was tested by Elisa and Western blot at 52 small children (0-2 yrs) hospitalised from acute viral hepatitis. Each patient was tested by HBsAg, serum levels of GPT, bilirubin, Tymol as well as other clinical parameters. The patients were divided into two lots according the presence or absence of HIV infection. Lot "A" = positive and lot "B" = negative. Biological and clinical parameters of two were compared. RESULTS: 24 (46.1%) made up lot "A" and 28 (53.9%) made up lot "B". Lot A presented HBs in 75% of the cases while lot B only in 64%. The serum bilirubin, GPT and Tymol were higher and all the symptoms were more intense and prolonged of lot A.HBsAg. disappeared within 40 days in 71% cases of lot A and in 78% in lot B. Lot A presented 2 d. CONCLUSIONS: The occurrence of type B viral hepatitis is higher with positive HIV children and lasts longer. HBsAg. remains longer with functional hepatic tests being altered, a higher risk of complications, requesting longer hospitalisation.
