Designed by United States Mint sculptor/engraver John Mercanti, the obverse of the Chief Justice John Marshall Silver Dollar features a rendition of a portrait of John Marshall originally executed by French painter Charles-Balthazar-Julien Fevret de Saint-Memin in March of 1808. The reverse, by United States Mint sculptor/engraver Donna Weaver features a view of the Old Supreme Court Chamber, located inside the Capitol building, on the side which houses the United States Senate.

The proof coin has a brilliant mirror-like finish. The term "proof" refers to a specialized minting process, which begins by manually feeding burnished coin planchets into presses fitted with specially polished dies. Each coin is struck multiple times so the softly frosted, yet detailed, images seem to float above a mirror-like field. The coin is then placed in a protective capsule and mounted in a handsome satin-lined velvet presentation case, accompanied by its own Certificate of Authenticity signed by the Director of the United States Mint.

In addition to the single coin options in both proof and uncirculated condition, the Chief Justice John Marshall Silver Dollar will also be available as part of two limited-edition collectible sets. First, a Coin & Chronicles Set will feature a Bureau of Engraving and Printing intaglio print and an informative booklet. The coin will also appear in a special set with the Marine Corps 230th Anniversary Silver Dollar later this year.

Metal composition of the coin is 90% silver and 10% copper. The coin's diameter is 1.5 inches and it weighs 26.73 grams.

The proof commemorative silver dollar is United States legal tender and is backed by the United States Government for weight and content.

This program is limited to 400,000 coins across four (4) options.
