Volunteers leave Silver Spring campus (carpool) and with grasses and ALL tank supplies. This is a 90 mile, 2 hour drive to Webster Field St. Mary’s County.

10:00 – 10: 30 AM

Arrive at Webster Field security station for security access and registration

10:30 – 11:00 AM

Welcome remarks and review day's logistics

11:00 – 12:30 PM

Restoration Activities: Morning
(Participants will be pre-assigned to 1 of 4 stations):

 

Stations:

1. Native Oyster Planting
Volunteers will walk 100 bags of oyster shell bags to offshore oyster reef using 2 john boats. They will spread oysters covered with spat onto existing reefs.
Number of volunteers: 15 - 17

Plant emergent marsh species to help stabilize and protect the shoreline
Number of volunteers: 45 - 50

3. Invasive Species Removal
Remove three stands of phragmites, a tree of heaven, and other invasive species from area.
Number of volunteers: 20 - 25

4. Shoreline Clean-up
Remove trash and debris from shoreline
Number of volunteers: 20

12:30 – 1:00 PM

Bag Lunch at Pavillion (Remember to bring your own lunch!!)

1:00 – 3:00 PM

Restoration Activities: Afternoon
(Participants will be pre-assigned to 1 of 4 stations):

Stations:

1. SAV Planting for volunteers involved with growing effort
Volunteers will wade into water and plant bay grasses previously grown in their offices, 2 people at a time

2. Wetland Planting (Low Intertidal)
Plant emergent marsh species to help stabilize and protect the shoreline
Number of volunteers: 45 - 50

3. Invasive Species Removal from Priest's House
Invasive ivy will be removed from historic Priest's House.
Number of volunteers: 10

4. Shoreline Clean-up
Remove trash and debris from shoreline
Number of volunteers: 10

3:00 - 3:30 PM

Conclusion and clean-up

Meet at Stoney's Kingfishers on Solomon's Island for optional social gathering to follow day's activities (NOTE: food and beverages must be purchased by participants).


Volunteer Supplies to Bring

  • Photo identification (NOAA badge, driver's license, etc.). WARNING: You will NOT be able to access the base without a picture I.D.
  • invasives removalBagged lunch or snack(s) (Some bottled water will be provided, but NOT food)
  • Bottled water/drinks
  • Swimsuit and/or old clothes, you will get wet!! (Quick dry fabrics work best; we will have two tents for changing into dry clothes).
  • Fieldwork clothes that can get muddy and wet (shorts and t-shirts). Remember to wear your NOAA logos. Quick-dry fabrics are recommended (nylon, not cotton).
  • Old shoes/sneakers/Teva sandals that can get wet (BARE FEET NOT ALLOWED!!)
  • Towel
  • Dry change of clothes and shoes
  • Plastic bag for your wet items
  • Waterproof sunscreen
  • Bug spray
  • Binoculars (optional – plenty of birding opportunities)
  • Sunglasses (optional)
  • Hat (optional)
  • Jacket/sweatshirt (if necessary)
  • Work gloves (optional – some will be provided)
  • Light weight/partial wet suit IF it's cold that day (you can use chest waders too)
  • Bag to hold your gear (backpack or dry bag). Plan on bringing all necessary items with you.
  • Be prepared, check the forecast before leaving your house in the morning!

Directions

The Webster Field Annex, PAX Naval Air Station - is located approximately 2 hours away from Silver Spring, MD in St. Inigoes, MD.

From the Capital Beltway (I- 495), Silver Spring:

  • Take I-495 (East) toward Baltimore/College Park
  • Take Exit 11A for MD RT 4 (South), Pennsylvania Avenue, toward Upper Marlboro
  • Follow MD Route 4 (S) through Prince Frederick and cross the Thomas Johnson Bridge near Solomons.
  • About 3 miles from the bridge at the first traffic light, TURN LEFT onto MD Route 235 South/ Three Notch Road (left 2 lanes at the light). NOTE: You will pass numerous places on MD 235 to buy gas, lunch, snacks, etc.
  • After you pass Patuxent NAS, the road becomes more rural
  • Turn RIGHT on Mattapany Road
  • Follow Mattapany Road until it ends
  • Turn LEFT at a T-intersection, and continue about 3 miles south on MD RT 5
  • Turn RIGHT on Villa Rd, large sign says Webster Field
  • Then drive about 2 miles to the base entrance (no turns)

From Annapolis:

  • Take MD RT 2 South (Solomons Island Rd) until it joins MD RT 4 (South)
  • Follow directions above starting from MD RT 4 (S)

From Baltimore (points North or East) Via I-97 South:

  • From I-97 (S), take exit number 7 onto MD Route 3 (S) towards Bowie
  • Follow MD RT 3 (S) which becomes US 301 (S) in Bowie
  • Exit at MD Route 4 (S), Pennsylvania Ave. towards Prince Frederick
  • Follow directions above starting from MD RT 4 (S)

From the South (Richmond, VA) Via MD Route 5:

  • Take US Route 301 (North) over the Potomac River Bridge
  • Turn right at the second set of blinking lights onto MD Route 234
  • Follow Rt. 234 about 23 miles to where it ends at MD Route 5
  • Turn right on MD RT. 5 (south), pass Leonardtown and continue about 15 miles to St. Mary’s College (located on Route 5-S)
  • From the college (at the two crosswalks and flashing yellow light), continue about 3 miles on MD RT 5 (S)
  • Turn right on Villa Rd, large sign says Webster Field
  • Then drive about 2 miles to the base entrance (no turns)

NOTES:

  • On-line mapping programs may tell you to take MD 5 from the Beltway, and it does go past Webster Field, but parts of it are slow & twisty, and you have to make a right turn near Mechanicsville to stay on it.
  • MD RT 4 is a four-lane highway all the way to Solomons. Prince Frederick is not as congested as Waldorf. NOTE: Watch out for speed traps!
  • Verizon cell phones usually work at Webster Field but you may lose the signal while passing the college.

Carpooling and Reserving NOAA Vehicles

Please contact the NOAA Motor Pool (301)713-1955 if you are interested in reserving one of the NOAA minivans or cars. NOTE: Both contractors and FEDS can reserve vehicles with a valid driver's license.

Rain Plan Procedure

Implementation of the rain contingency plan will be decided by 4:00pm the day before the event (Monday, June 13). This decision will be available through a recorded message. Call (301)713-3000 x110 after5:00 to check the event status NOTE: this event will only be postponed in the event of severe weather (e.g. thunderstorms), not for light rain or cold temperatures. The rain date has been scheduled for Wednesday, June 15, 2005.
