Abstract The experiment was conducted in the Tuscarora Mountain Tunnel, a two-bore tunnel, two lanes each bore, 5325.4 feet long, carrying the Pennsylvania Turnpike (Interstate 76) east-west through Tuscarora Mountain in south central Pennsylvania. The tunnel is flat and straight. 20 experimental runs were performed during the period of May 18-23, 1999. All experimental periods except for the last period were one hour in duration. The final period was dominated by light duty vehicles and was two hours in duration in order to collect a larger particulate sample for chemical analysis. A total of 6,588 cars, 290 medium gasoline and diesel trucks, and 2,883 large diesel trucks were observed.
