Introduction - Health Related Quality of Life (HRQL) following lung transplantation (LGTX) becomes more important with increased life expectancy. In the present study, the change in HRQL among surviving Dutch lung transplant patients was examined before, and up to 55 months after transplantation. This study is part of a technology assessment. Methods - Between 1992 and 2000, 28 patients completed self-administered questionnaires before LGTX, and at 4, 7, 19, 31, 43 and 55 months after LGTX. HRQL measures were: the Nottingham Health Profile (NHP), the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI), the Index of Well-Being (IWB) and the Self-Rating Depression Scale-Zung (ZUNG).Results - Before LGTX, patients report major restriction on the NHP-dimensions energy and mobility, a low level of experienced well-being, and depressive symptoms. About 4 months after LGTX, most HRQL measures improved significantly. Overall, this positive trend was maintained in the following 51 months. Conclusion - LGTX has a substantial positive impact on many dimensions of HRQL in surviving patients. This improvement was maintained over long-term follow-up, which may justify the relative high costs of the intervention.
