2003 US-Japan Joint
Workshop
on
High Heat Flux Components and Plasma Surface Interactions
for Next Fusion Devices& Fusion High Power Density Devices and
Design
Manresa Castle, Port Townsend, WA
Our workshop was held on July
28-31, 2003 at the Manresa Castle in Port Townsend, a small scenic town
in Washington State (USA)
located on the ocean in the northeastern corner of the Olympic
Peninsula. This was a
“transition workshop” in two senses. At the request of the US, two
previously separate workshops are being combined into a single joint workshop.
Also, our summer date is a transition from past meetings in the fall to future dates in the spring. More
information is given in the presentation "Workshop History". We meet
annually and alternate
sites between Japan and the US.
Recent meetings of the long-standing US-Japan Workshop HHF Components
and PSI for Next Fusion Devices have been held at Nagoya University in
December 2002 and Asilomar Conference Center (California) in December 2001.A recent US-Japan
Workshop on Fusion HPD Devices and Design was held at UCLA, Los Angeles, California, in October 2002.
We publish our workshops on
the web in the US and in Japan. The presentations for HHF
Components and PSI for Next Fusion Devices in December 2002 in Nagoya may
be found at http://www.nifs.ac.jp/usjp2002/index.html. In a casual format, we discuss ongoing
progress and problems without the need of a formal paper. This year, major themes were plasma edge issues
and plasma surface interactions in non-tokamak devices, simulations of
material damage in IFE chambers and high power density.
I wish to thank the workshop attendees for their interesting presentations
and excellent discussions. As always, the workshop provided
opportunities to see old
friends, make new friends and learn about interesting ongoing work.
Sincerely,
Richard E. Nygren,
Workshop Editor
