Abstract: BACKGROUND: To estimate indirect costs in Spanish HIV/AIDS ambulatory patients. The pilot study pretends to test the relevance of the explicative variables. Also, we want to identify possible weaknesses of the questionnaire in order to improve it. METHOD: The information was obtained through 32 interviews/inquiries carried out in ambulatory patients attended at HGU Gregorio Maranon and HGU Clinica Puerta de Hierro hospitals. The study variables include information on socio-demographics, economics, clinical and quality of life (EuroQol 5D) of these patients. RESULTS: Our main result was to show the existence of high costs at individual level. We identified a strong effect in terms of lost incomes (the annual loss of income in current values lying between 5271.12Euros and 6149.64 Euros per patient) and lost wages (the annual loss of wages in current values lying between 7536.84 Eurosand 8792.98 Euros per patient). We also observed a strong impact on household income (the annual loss of household income in current values lying between 6692.72 Eurosand 7812.84 Euros). It was observed a great variability in these costs among the patients depending on their quality of life, sex and education. It was detected a significant correlation between quality of life and the fact of having a job. CONCLUSIONS: We observed a good level of quality of life among the patients, which reflects the potential benefits of pharmacological treatment. We found that the better the quality of life, the higher the probability of being employed. Indirect costs were high among patients despite their good quality of life. Key words: HIV/AIDS, indirect costs, labour market
