In a temporary situation what is the maximum height a crosswalk sigh may be
mounted? Is there any restrictions on what it can be mounted on? We have work
being done by the roadway and a fence will be place along the curb and may
obstruct the view of the crosswalk sign. I needed to know how high they can be
and if necessary they could be mounted atop the fence?
If you are worried about obstructing the signs, have you considered whether the
lines of sight betweens pedestrians and drivers will be obstructed?
I don't recall any standards or guidance in the Manual, but there are practical
limitations based on the limitations of the sign materials used.
Minimum height would be 7" to the bottom of sign. No maximum height set by
MUTCD.
Make that 7 feet...
Unless the roadway in question is in an environment built on a 1:12 scale. The
inhabitants of Lilliput were about 1/12 the height of human beings (men were 6
inches high), so if Lilliput has adopted appropriately scaled MUTCD standards,
the traffic signs in areas where Lilliputian parking or pedestrian movements
occur should provide 7 inches minimum clearance to bottom of sign.
If Lilliput has also adopted international units, this confusion would not
arise, as the units of dimensions are usually implicit from context. For
example, if a Lilliputian posting on this thread wrote simply "We provide 0.21
[or 210] minimum clearance to bottom of sign in pedestrian areas", then we
could reasonably infer what they meant.
