Flash Flood Warning Safety Tips

  • What to do when a Flash Flood Warning is issued for your area, or the moment you realize that a flash flood is imminent, act quickly. You may have only seconds to save your life:

  • Move to a safe area (higher ground) before access is cut off by flood waters. Water rises rapidly during flash floods, often taking victims by surprise.

  • Don't try to outrace a flood on foot. If you see or hear it coming, move to higher ground immediately.

  • Do not drive across flooded roads or bridges. They may be washed out. If you come across flood waters STOP! TURN AROUND AND GO ANOTHER WAY! Nearly half of all flash flood deaths are auto related.

  • Do not attempt to cross a flowing stream on foot. Even 6 inches of fast moving flood waters can knock you off your feet.

  • Avoid already flooded and high velocity flow areas. As little as six inches of water may cause you to lose control of your vehicle. Two feet of flowing water will carry most cars away.

  • Do not drive around barricades. They are there for your safety.

  • Be especially cautious at night when it is harder to recognize flood dangers.

  • Get out of areas subject to flooding. This includes streams, dips, low spots, canyons, washes, storm drains, etc.

  • Do not allow children to play around streams, drainage ditches, viaducts, or storm drains.
