It has been another enjoyable and busy year as coordinator of this project. During the months of Oct. 2004-March 2005, I added 59 headings to my review file. Of these, only 21 were vetted and submitted to Library of Congress (LC). (The other 12 in the above list were first added earlier.) The backlog continues to grow, as I continue to research obscure topics.
A major achievement since last Fall was the March submission of 8 new or revised headings in connection with the confusion between the Mbundu and Ovimbundu peoples of Angola. Janet Stanley first brought this problem to my attention in September 2001. Old priorities I hope to submit before Fall are the elimination of Hamitic from headings and revisions in the use of “Bantu-speaking peoples” and “Indigenous peoples”, especially as used for the majority population of South Africa.
The review at LC is usually quite timely. Sometimes there are transmission problems. I usually get timely notification of changes. For example, “Nigerian market literature” was accepted as a cross-reference but not as a replacement for “Chapbooks, Nigerian.”
I continue to monitor the Tentative Weekly List and Weekly List of new or revised headings and have noticed a trend to remove BTs and RTs that are only loosely related to the heading. The appendix lists the 98 new subjects submitted by non-funnel sources, including 35 from LC.
