Educational Resources Available From the Anasazi Heritage Center

The Anasazi Heritage Center offers a variety of education resources and opportunities. Explore the options below, then contact us at (970) 882-5600 or by e-mail .  

  • Planning a group visit to the museum
  • The Escalante Pueblo Curriculum is a collection of ten award-winning lesson plans with teacher and student worksheets for interdisciplinary activities. These experience-based plans will help teachers lead educational visits to the Anasazi Heritage Center or to Canyons of the Ancients National Monument. Subjects include folklore, art, science, math, and social studies. You can download the Curriculum here .
  • Artifact Loan Kits: Sets of genuine artifacts are available for loan to teachers for classroom use. Each k it is an opportunity to touch and learn about the culture of Ancestral Pu ebloan (Anasazi) or modern Native American people. These kits are organized by several different themes and include suggested classroom activities.
  • The Bear Dance: Window to Ute Culture   is a 25-page document from the Ute Culture loan kit. It includes four sections with activities: Ute History & Culture, The Bear Dance Tradition, Ute Beadwork, and The Hand Game.
  • Project Archaeology : The BLM Heritage Education Program offers teacher workshops, student activity books, lesson plans, posters, articles and general information on heritage education. Teachers' workshops are scheduled frequently; contact Derrick Baldwin for more information.
  • Traveling Exhibits. The museum loans exhibits to qualified institutions, including schools. Topics include regional history, prehistory, and Native American cultures. Borrowers assume responsibility for one-way transport, assembly and disassembly, inspection, and security.

  • Free Handouts on recreation opportunities, BLM resource management, ecology principles, road maps, gardening, ancient and contemporary cultures, and many educational activities including a new "History Mystery" series. You can pick them up at the museum or have them mailed to you. Please describe your specific topics of interest.
  • Museum Shop: A variety of teaching aids are available in our shop- including curricula, music, craft kits, children's books, maps, posters, and more.

  • "Getting to Know Canyons of the Ancients National Monument" is a teacher's guide to the natural and cultural history of the Monument. It contains suggested student activities and helpful hints for field trips. It is available from the museum library, or for sale in the museum shop.

  • Archaeology Library: The museum maintains a specialized archaeology-oriented library with over 5000 titles, including videotape programs. The library is open to the public on weekdays by appointment. Items can also be checked out by phone or e-mail. Shipping fees may be required.

  • Education Workshops. The museum occasionally hosts educator workshops on classroom and field trip curricula. Continuing education credits may be available. Some workshops involve skilled craftspeople teaching crafts such as basketry, beadwork, ceramics, story telling, or leatherwork. Open to individuals, families, or community groups, these workshops may last several hours or several days. Scheduled future workshops (if any) are listed on the AHC Coming Events web page.
