Description:
Abstract:
This dataset was created for the Appalachian Trail Environmental Monitoring Community project funded by the National Biological Information Infrastructure-Southern Appalachian Information Node (NBII-SAIN) at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville, TN. The goal of the project is through collaboration among willing partners, to establish a 2,167 mile continental transect dedicated to environmental inventory and monitoring (I&M) via the Appalachian Trail (AT) Corridor. This goal will be realized by the creation of an internet Community on the USGS NBII Portal concerning the environmental I&M on the AT Corridor. A database of publicly available key ecosystem data themes was defined, and the data harvested from various sources. The purpose of these compiled data sets is to place the state of the environment along the A.T. in a continental-scale context in one centralized location. With assistance from the USGS Eastern Region Geospatial Program Office, these datasets will be implemented via an online data viewer located on the USGS CUES website.

This file contains hydrologic unit boundaries and codes for the AT Corridor. It was revised for inclusion in the National Atlas of the United States of America, and updated to match the streams file created by the USGS National Mapping Division (NMD) for the National Atlas of the United States of America.

Purpose:
To place the state of the environment in a continental-scale context. This project supplement will hopefully prove to be an impetus for collaboration and discussion among key AT scientists involved in environmental I&M.

Logical_Consistency_Report:
Polygon and chain-node topology are present. All polygons are labeled and were tested by using the Arc/INFO command labelerrors. All polygons were checked for closure and intersections by using the Arc/INFO intersecter command. The file is clean.
Completeness_Report:
Only data falling within the fourteen states through which the AT trail runs through was included in the dataset, as well as South Carolina, Delaware, and Rhode Island due to their close geographic proximity with the rest of the AT Corridor states.

Process_Description:
Data downloaded from National Atlas or Appalachian Trail Conservancy (ATC) or Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS)

Data located on the National Atlas or ATC website was downloaded via Zipfile, extracted, and opened in either ArcInfo 8.3 or 9.0. If the data was in shapefile format, the data was clipped using ArcToolbox, if larger than the aforementioned states, to the subject Eastern region of the U.S. which includes the fourteen states through which the trail runs through, as well as South Carolina, Delaware, and Rhode Island. The data was then exported in the current data frame coordinate system deemed appropriate for the subject area.

If the data was in DBF table format, a duplicate copy of the U.S. counties shapefile was made, and the data was joined based on FIPS codes. Depending on the data, layer properties and category values may have been modified to visually display the particular characteristics of that specific dataset.
