INTRODUCTION The Sanitarian Professional Advisory Committee (SPAC) addresses the needs of the sanitarian profession through it's quarterly meetings and subcommittee activities where issues of concern to all sanitarians, both Civil Service and Commissioned Corps, are discussed. The SPAC communicates with it's audience through the minutes of these meetings, as well as through contacts with individual SPAC members. In addition, the SPAC develops various publications for the sanitarians' information and use. In 1981, the SPAC first published the "Sanitarian Directory". This document is updated annually and contains the names and addresses of all Sanitarians and Technicians in the Public Health Service (PHS), as well as the names of those who have retired. A recruitment booklet, entitled "The Sanitarian in the Public Health Service", originally printed in 1980, was completely revised and reprinted in 1990. To assist Sanitarians in their professional development, the SPAC prepared the publication "Training Resources, Professional Organizations and Academic Programs of Interest to Sanitarians". Another publication, entitled "Sanitarian Professional Advisory Committee", identified the SPAC role and provided statistical data on utilization of Sanitarians in the PHS. Consistent with the continuing efforts of the SPAC to serve as a focal point for, and advocate on, issues for PHS Sanitarians, a subcommittee was established in 1989 to review the above documents and devise a better method for updating information of interest to the category. The contents of this three ring binder represent the initial efforts of the subcommittee, and include not only revised versions of the last two documents highlighted, but also other information which should be helpful to sanitarians regardless of where they are stationed. The consolidation of information into one three ring binder will greatly enhance our ability to revise, update and add information in a more timely manner, and will organize SPAC information in one document. The SPAC Resource Book will be provided to all active duty commissioned officer and civil service sanitarians. All newly appointed sanitarians also will receive the book, along with other PHS informational material, as part of the call to duty package provided by the SPAC. The SPAC represents the Sanitarians of the PHS. We therefore look to all sanitarians for support and request your comments and ideas in order to best serve our profession. Bruce Kevin Molloy, R.S. Chairperson, SPAC
