DISCUSSION

The Loony Lunar Gold Rush is a story about finding gold on the Moon. Uncle Scrooge and other greedy Earthlings launch rocketships "moonward" in a spaceage goldrush quest. Several amusing attempts to reach the Moon make useful scientific object lessons for students. One comic panel depicts Scrooge climbing a flagpole in an attempt to reach the Moon. Could a flagpole be constructed tall enough (240,000 miles) to reach the Moon? A second lunar goldminer dons a spacesuit, positions himself on a spring catapult, and orders the latch to be released. Could a spring catapult launch an astronaut into lunar orbit? A third attempt is made by Donald Duck. Spacesuited Donald sits atop a cannon and lights a fuse. Could an astronaut's spaceship reach the Moon in this fashion - being fired from an enormous cannon? Jules Verne's story, FROM THE EARTH TO THE MOON, featured such a concept.
