Greetings NERSC SP User,
NERSC has implemented a batch queue class to help backfill idle
time associated with system downtimes. Right now (Wed., July 7, 08:00
PDT) is an excellent
time to utilize this class as the machine is idling for a system
outage.
You should see very good turn around time in this class for a wide range
of job sizes while the machine is draining for this afternoon's downtime
at 16:00 PDT.
Note that the wallclock limit for this class is 4 hours and running jobs
will
be killed when the system is taken down for the scheduled outage.
Your LoadLeveler job must be submitted to the "backfill" class, as in:
#@class=backfill
For more information, see

The NERSC Consulting Staff
Backfill Class Schedule
* The purpose of the backfill submit class is to allow short jobs
to run while the system is "draining" before a scheduled downtime.
* During normal operation, the backfill submit class will have a
run limit (Maxjobs) of 0; jobs submitted to it will not be scheduled for
execution. However, prior to a scheduled system downtime, the following
changes will occur:
o 8 hours before the scheduled downtime, the run limit for
the premium, regular, and low submit classes will be set to 0. This will
allow jobs currently running in those classes 8 hours to complete. No
new jobs from those classes will start during this time.
o At the same time as the above change, the backfill submit
class will be enabled. During the 8 hours leading up to the downtime,
this is the only submit class from which jobs will start.
o At the end of the above 8-hour interval, any jobs still
running (in any class) will be terminated, any pending jobs in the
backfill class will be canceled, and the system will be removed from
general use.
o When the system is returned to normal operation, the
backfill class will again be disabled, and the premium, regular, and low
submit classes will be re-enabled.
