ks-crop-weather State Kansas Crop Weather Issue KS-CW0623 Released: June 5, 2006 Agricultural Summary: Though most areas of the State received rain during the week, the amounts received varied. Producers averaged 4.8 days suitable for fieldwork last week. Spring planting and alfalfa cutting were the major activities. Topsoil moisture was rated 16 percent very short, 24 percent short, 57 percent adequate, and 3 percent surplus. Subsoil moisture was rated 24 percent very short, 30 percent short, and 46 percent adequate. Field Crop Report: Eighty percent of the wheat has turned, compared to 57 percent last year and 55 percent for the 5-year average. Thirteen percent of the wheat is ripe. One percent of the wheat has been harvested. Wheat condition was rated 24 percent very poor, 29 percent poor, 31 percent fair, 15 percent good, and 1 percent excellent. Insect reports indicated 66 percent with no infestation, 28 percent with light infestation, 5 percent with moderate infestation, and 1 percent with severe infestation. Disease reports indicated 51 percent of the wheat showed no presence, 27 percent with light presence, 14 percent with moderate presence, and 8 percent with severe presence. Ninety-six percent of the corn has emerged, compared to 98 percent last year and 95 percent for the 5-year average. Corn condition was rated 3 percent poor, 32 percent fair, 59 percent good, and 6 percent excellent. Forty-nine percent of the sorghum has been planted, six points behind last year and twelve points behind the 5-year average. Twenty-seven percent of the sorghum has emerged, eight points behind last year and eleven points behind the 5-year average. Seventy-seven percent of the soybeans have been planted, compared to 76 percent last year and 74 percent for the 5-year average. Fifty-three percent of the soybeans have emerged, compared to 57 percent last year and 55 percent for the 5-year average. Soybean condition was rated 3 percent poor, 30 percent fair, 63 percent good, and 4 percent excellent. Thirty-nine percent of the sunflowers have been planted, compared to 51 percent last year and 41 percent for the 5-year average. Eleven percent of the sunflowers have emerged, compared to 35 percent last year and 23 percent for the 5-year average. Ninety percent of the first cutting alfalfa has been harvested, compared to 89 percent last year and 88 percent for the 5-year average. Two percent of the second cutting alfalfa has been harvested, two points behind last year but the same as the 5-year average. Fifty percent of the cotton has been planted, compared to 53 percent last year and 67 percent for the 5-year average. Cotton condition was rated 1 percent very poor, 3 percent poor, 43 percent fair, 47 percent good, and 6 percent excellent. Pasture and Range Report: Range and pasture conditions were rated 10 percent very poor, 20 percent poor, 38 percent fair, 30 percent good, and 2 percent excellent. Feed grain supplies were rated 1 percent very short, 6 percent short, and 93 percent adequate. Hay and forage supplies were rated 2 percent very short, 18 percent short, 77 percent adequate, and 3 percent surplus. Stock water supplies were rated 8 percent very short, 18 percent short, and 74 percent adequate.
