Alison Bunting Named Chair of the NLM Board of Regents


Alison Bunting During the National Library of Medicine update at the Medical Library Association meeting in Dallas in May, 2002, NLM Director Donald Lindberg announced that Alison Bunting, Director of PSRML, has been elected as Chair of the NLM Board of Regents. Alison's term begins in July 2002. She will oversee her first Board meeting in Bethesda, MD, in September 2002.

Alison will be taking the helm from Henry Foster, M.D., who, in addition to serving as Chair of the Board of Regents, is the 2nd Vice Chairman of the Charles R. Drew School of Medicine and Science in Los Angeles. He also served as Senior Advisor to President Clinton on Teen and Youth Issues.

The NLM Board of Regents was established in 1956 by the same Act that created the National Library of Medicine. It serves as the advisory body to the Secretary, Health and Human Services; Assistant Secretary for Health; Director, National Institutes of Health; and the Director, National Library of Medicine, on all important aspects of policy regarding the National Library of Medicine and is the final review body for NLM's extramural grant programs. The Board meets three times a year in February, May, and September. Minutes of Board meetings are posted on the NLM web site at http://www.nlm.nih.gov/od/bor/bor.html.

[Note: Alison Bunting also becomes Interim University Librarian in July 2002, following the retirement of Gloria Werner - Alison will continue as PSRML Director until her retirement from UCLA in December 2002.]
