DOC has submitted to the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) for clearance the following proposal for collection of information under the provisions of the Paperwork Reduction Act (44 U.S.C. chapter 35).

AGENCY: Bureau of the Census.

Title: American Travel Survey.

Form Number(s): ATS-1, 2, 6(L), 7(L), 7(L).1, 7(L).2, 7(L).3, 8(L), 9(L), 9(L).1, 9(L).2, 9(L).3, 10, 14, 15.

Agency Approval Number: None.

Type of Request: New collection.

Burden: 142,626 hours.

Number of Respondents: 87,000.

Avg Hours Per Response: 26 minutes.

Needs and Uses: The Census Bureau plans to conduct the American Travel Survey (ATS) as part of the larger Census of Transportation. This survey will provide information on the interregional flows of passenger travel. The Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS) of the Department of Transportation (DOT) has contracted with the Census Bureau to conduct the sampling, data collection, and processing operations for the ATS. The BTS and DOT will use the data to develop and analyze legislation affecting billions of dollars in user charges, infrastructure investments, new technology initiatives, and productivity of the transportation industry. Private businesses will use the data to find markets and target activities to survive and prosper in a dynamic economy. We will interview sampled households four times over a one year period. We will collect the data by conducting computer assisted telephone and personal interviews.
