July 1, 1999

Washington, D. C. -- The Senate last night confirmed Stefan Underhill of Fairfield, Connecticut, as a U.S. District Court Judge for the District of Connecticut, Senators Chris Dodd and Joe Lieberman, both D-Conn., announced today.  Mr. Underhill was Dodd’s and Senator Lieberman’s nominee for the position.

“Stefan Underhill will be a terrific addition to our courts.  He has the integrity, skill and experience needed to make a first rate district court judge and I am confident that justice will be well served under his stewardship,” Dodd said.  “I am proud to have worked to secure his appointment.”

“I’m pleased the Senate has confirmed Stefan Underhill’s nomination quickly and without dissent.  He is one of the state’s premier litigators, as insightful lawyer, and a great citizen of Connecticut.  I’m confident he will serve the people of Connecticut evenhandedly, compassionately, and always with their best interest in mind,” Lieberman said.

Mr. Underhill has a distinguished career within the legal profession.  After attending Oxford University as a Rhodes Scholar, he went on to graduate from Yale University Law School.  He is currently a trial lawyer and partner with the firm of Day, Berry & Howard in Stamford.

In addition to his legal expertise, Mr. Underhill has a special interest in his community’s underprivileged populations and youth.  He sits on the Board of Directors of Connecticut Legal Services, a non-profit organization that serves the legal needs of the state’s poor.  Moreover, Stefan is the Cubmaster for a local troop of Boy Scouts, serving as an exemplary role model and mentor to this organization’s youth.
